We found a little bit of everything from the street style photos at Tokyo Fashion Week 2021, and here are the trends that we’re taking away

The beauty of street style is that you see personal iterations and integrations of trends, regardless of what’s on the runway.

People in Tokyo have some of the most adventurous tastes in fashion, and those looks totally come out to play during fashion week. Here’s a roundup of our favourite trends that we spotted on the streets.

1. Back to black

All black? To fashion week? How original. But honestly, black never fails to look good. It suits every mood, every show and every hour. You’ll never look too dressed up or down, and it’s easy to inject personality into your outfits. Fashion week attendees played around with various fabrics, textures, layers and cut outs, all of which said something different about themselves in the same colour.

2. Extra wide everything

Oversized fits aren’t anything new, but wide-legged trousers are everywhere. One silhouette, where the leg flares in a dramatic fashion from the knee down, are a dominant trend. It was styled in a variety of ways—balance yours with a more fitted top or pair with something equally wide—proving that this is a very versatile look.

3. Thoughtful layering

Layering is another trend that the Japanese do oh-so-well, and we can’t help but admire this particular look. A loose-fitting jumpsuit in an accordion fabric with a T-shirt underneath and two scarves tied two ways—one around the waist like a skirt/apron/sarong and one folded and tied short around the neck—looks comfortable, elegant and totally customisable.

4. Hints of tradition

Cultural representation is making its way into wardrobes, and what better time to share one’s heritage than at Tokyo Fashion Week? Traditional Japanese clothing, accessories and fabrics were popular among guests, and we saw hints of kimono, yukata and geta incorporated into modern looks to create a fun fusion.

5. Western affair

Japanese fashion has always loved the American cowboy look, and there are multiple vintage and secondhand shops in Tokyo totally dedicated to stocking Americana clothing and accessories. Different western details were seen, from the ubiquitous cowboy boots that made a massive comeback recently—I mean just look at these!—to subtle details like studded belt buckles.
