A junior doctor by day, and an entrepreneur by night, Zoen Tay, who is even looking into acting now, proves that one can have it all

“Please go easy on me [today],” laments Zoen Tay, when we meet for the photo shoot for this story. “My body organs still haven’t caught up with me since I survived my stunt training two days ago.” Tay has been undergoing intensive training to prepare herself for a new acting role in an action comedy. “I’m afraid I’m not allowed to say much, but I can tell you that we’ll be filming in northern Thailand.”

With pre-production for the drama underway, it is as if by stroke of luck that we manage to sit down with the daughter of entrepreneurs Jerome Tay and Alice Neo, who are in the business of beauty and wellness, for this interview despite her demanding schedule as a junior doctor. More than just a rising star in the medical field, the University of New South Wales and Anglo Chinese School (Independent) alumna is an unstoppable force of passion and ambition.

Having been fascinated by the intricate science of skincare, in her spare time, Tay delved into research and development. Her curiosity and dedication eventually led her to develop her own line of skincare products. “I used to be extremely conscious of my skin. Back in secondary school, I would bring around a concealer, so I could conceal any trace of blemish on my face. It really affected my self‑confidence. I felt like Blanche from A Streetcar Named Desire,” she says, referring to the anti-hero character in the 1950s film.

“So I wanted to create something truly effective to help others with similar struggles. I did so with the help of my parents who have been in the beauty industry for the past 30 years,” shares Tay. With their blessings, she started Zyu Skincare in 2019, right before the pandemic, and has not looked back since. The brand quickly gained recognition and accolades from beauty editors and the wider industry for its quality and efficacy.

But Tay did not stop there.

A creative soul at heart, she harboured a secret passion for acting since young. “I used to do a bit of theatre, then passed up other opportunities to focus on medicine. The upcoming film will be my first time acting on screen.”

While medicine is still her calling, the allure of the stage has beckoned her. With her skincare line flourishing and her medical career on a steady trajectory, Tay made the bold decision to take a short break for a year from her duties as a healthcare professional to pursue acting.

“All the stars have magically aligned and I have been blessed with opportunities that I feel need to be taken now because if not now, then when?,” enthuses Tay, proving that one can have it all, if you take the bull by the horns.
