Half-German, half-Czech ingénue, Annabel Böhm, who calls Singapore home, speaks like a local and can out-talk anyone in Singlish, on and off the set of fashion shoots and netball courts
No stranger to the camera, Annabel Böhm cuts an impressive figure in a crushed velvet column gown, as if it was made specifically for her, towering at an astounding 1.8 m in heels. After all, the 18-year-old half-German, half-Czech beauty—the only daughter of the inimitable society face Paulina Böhm—is a professional model, at least in her free time.
You can say that the apfel does not fall far from the tree—in the sense that both their styles and cackles are uncannily similar.
“Aiyah, just how do you want me to pose?” Böhm asks, with an inflection of Singlish so nuanced it completely warms our hearts to hear, before breaking into that familiar Böhm-brand laughter. Her family, with mum and older brother, relocated to Singapore when she was six-months-old and her formative years were spent at some of the best local schools here—and the rest as they say is history lah.
Active in sport, when she needs a breather from preparing for her A-levels, Böhm is also on the Anglo-Chinese Junior College netball team. “The feeling of accomplishment I get when I see myself improve alongside my teammates is such a precious shared experience,” she squeals.
She hits every pose—and ball—we threw at her during the photo shoot for this story, with unwavering balance and precision, effectively marrying her passion for modelling and playing netball with aplomb— nary a wisp of hair out of place and never once breaking out in sweat.
Outside of school and modelling work, Böhm is just like any other young woman who spends a lot of her time at home with her three “beautifully spoilt” teacup Chihuahuas: Mei Mei, Ritz and Tiny NPC, which she occasionally posts snapshots of on social media.
Her love for her family comes through clearly when she speaks about her mother. “Aside from her unconditional love and selflessness, I think the greatest things my mother has given my brother and me are our three dogs. I’m actually asking her to expand our paw family to 88 dogs!”
We know it is a lot to process, but Böhm is a woman who was raised to admire people who take risks and conditioned to look up to leaders who are unconventional.
“People who don’t pay attention to criticism and always consider
the positive in the most negative of situations are so strong. It takes a lot of strength to stay positive and focus on one’s goals,” says Böhm. “These are also the qualities I see in my mother and try to emulate myself.”
This go-getter has her sights set on the future—she hopes to apply for a spot at the National University of Singapore Business School. Call it our journalistic hunch, but Böhm’s future is as bright as her flaxen hair.
