See the best runway looks, beauty moments, and celebrity style from Rodarte’s latest fashion show
Rodarte has opened New York Fashion Week with a fashion show that seemed straight out of a fairytale—but less Sleeping Beauty and more Maleficent. Designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s favourite inspirations—fantasy, gothic glamour, Victoriana—came together for a spectacle that is dark and romantic. In other words, very Rodarte. Below, we highlight everything you need to know about the fashion show, from the sparkling setting to the beautiful dresses that came down the runway.

A glittering silver banquet, complete with candelabras and cakes, was set up in the middle of Williamsburg Savings Bank in New York for the show, which marked Rodarte’s return to the city after showing in Los Angeles in previous seasons. Tori Amos’ Winter added to the haunting atmosphere.

Fairies were the starting point of the collection. The Mulleavys used their mother’s colourful and whimsical illustrations of the magical beings as prints across the collection. The Rodarte sisters love their history and horror, so the collection was also heavy on gothic glamour, 1930s silhouettes, and Victoriana.
The Looks
Morticia Addams would adore the vampy black velvet gowns, fitted with sweeping bell sleeves and seductive, plunging necklines. Wednesday Addams, on the other hand, would prefer the prim black satin dresses trimmed with white lace. There was a lot of sparkle, courtesy of the giant, cocoon-like gowns covered in tinsel. For party dressing, look to the rainbow sequin dress embellished with bows, or the dazzling fringed slip dresses.

The beauty looks were ruled by Siouxsie Sioux-inspired eye makeup. To anyone who isn’t into the goth music icon, that translates into graphic black eyeliner looks with dramatic wings. These were matched with black or blue lipstick, talon-like nails and a cold glare for maximum Maleficent energy.
The Front Row
Hollywood celebrities Brie Larson, Natasha Lyonne and Rowan Blanchard all rubbed shoulders at the show, dressed in their gleaming velvets and satin dresses. Lana Condor was especially ravishing in a black and white animal print gown with lace panels and mutton sleeves. Fashion regulars Alexa Chung and Bling Empire’s Tina Leung were there too; the latter opted for a green knit ensemble that matched her hair. Alternative pop band Japanese Breakfast singer Michelle Zauner’s glittering pink coord proved that we haven’t quite left Barbiecore behind us yet.
