The Addams Family icon shows us how to add gothic glamour to our holiday party outfits

The words “festive dressing” rarely call to mind the dark, dramatic glamour of Morticia Addams, but perhaps it’s time to change that.

84 years after her creation, the gothic matriarch of The Addams Family is back in the spotlight thanks to Tim Burton’s new Netflix series, Wednesday. In the show, Morticia is portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones, who joins a canon of actresses that have taken on the legendary role: Carolyn Jones, Charlize Theron, and most memorably, Anjelica Huston.

Despite their different interpretations of Morticia, what remains constant is the character’s captivating presence; she boasts impeccable style and refined manners, two qualities that transform one into an excellent party host or guest. While the latter can be learned through etiquette classes, Morticia’s striking, seductive looks can easily be recreated if you wish to command attention at your next social affair.

The first rule? Ditch the colours. Let everyone else arrive in Christmas hues like red, green and gold while you create an air of mystique by wearing a long black gown.

With the absence of colour, the cut of the dress is everything. Morticia Addams has traditionally emphasised her hourglass figure through form-fitting, long-sleeved gowns, with bell sleeves and a trailing trumpet hem that add a witchy flourish. A corset, like the one worn by Huston’s Morticia, can help you create the desired silhouette, but you can also opt for clingy fabrics like jersey, which feature across the evening gowns of Saint Laurent’s Winter 2022 collection.

In the décolletage department, Morticia favours a low neckline: think a modest V-neck, as seen on Carolyn Jones, which is ideal for those with broad shoulders, or a wide, sweetheart one as worn by Catherine Zeta-Jones that flatters a fuller bust. You could also consider the universally flattering scoop neckline, which appears on a style from Maison Alaïa’s new capsule collection of black dresses. (Morticia would definitely love the king of cling’s timeless designs.)

While you could simply draw eyes to your bare neck, you can also make use of the neckline of your dress to show off a precious pendant necklace, just as Carolyn Jones did. Pick a gemstone or a symbol that hypnotises and radiates power—like the Panthère de Cartier, whose bold expression and feline features brilliantly mirror that of Huston’s in The Addams Family films.

Another way to stand out, according to Morticia Addams’ style playbook? Sky-high stilettos. Mermaid gowns can only go so far in elongating the body; to truly tower over your fellow party guests and assume a quietly dominating aura, consider Manolo Blahnik’s panoply of black pumps. They come in classic silhouettes that would be embraced by all three generations of the actresses that played Morticia. The BB Crystal shoes are perfect for a glitzy Christmas affair, but if you’re attending a gathering filled with frenemies, the Khaduno snakeskin pumps will serve others as a reminder that despite your sophisticated nature, you can indeed bite back.

Your transformation as the queen of the night won’t be complete without a dose gothic glamour. Relieve your all-black look with touches of red via your nail polish and lipstick, just as Huston did.

You absolutely can’t go wrong with the Rouge Dior lipstick in 999, a rich, crimson shade that works well on various skintones and dates back to 1953. It’s offered in four finishes from matte to metallic, but for maximum impact, opt for the satin version. The little beauty trick will also allow you to truly tap onto your feminine power this festive season, as Tatler Singapore’s own style icon, Shabnam Arashan, can attest: “When your mood feels a bit off, or you’re not at your optimum, a red lipstick can always take things up a notch.”
