Artistry springs forth not only through talent and skill but also thought, which Masanting Sastreria’s co-founders Carin and Mark Aguas put at the front and centre of their distinctly Filipino brand of bespoke tailoring—and now, including casual wear
Tucked in the heart of the Kapitolyo neighbourhood in Pasig, Masanting Sastreria welcomes clients to a comfortable and visually pleasing boutique. The open-layout office on the third floor of the Rosemarie Building houses the brand’s private sitting room adorned with mid-century modern charm and its “friends”, like the architecture and design firm Greener & Partners office. The fluidity of the space and the inviting ambience speak true to Masanting Sastreria’s business philosophy. It was not something forced into the brand DNA but rather organically came forth when Carin and Mark Aguas were starting to build Masanting Sastreria.
“Building lasting relationships with our clients is essential because it fosters trust and ensures that each suit we create is a true representation of the individual, enhancing their confidence and personal style,” Mark says.

Coming from the world of accounting and finance, Mark needed a well-fitted suit for his internship in New York. At the time, suits fit for the Asian physique were scarce, so he had one made in Manila. Unsurprisingly, his suit caught a colleague’s eye, who assumed Mark made it himself and requested a similar one.
Masanting Sastreria’s journey began with Mark collaborating with his then-fiancée Carin and a tailor in Manila via Skype. Initially, the business was more of a shared activity between the couple during a seven-year long-distance relationship. Mark would go home to the Philippines to get the suits for their clients in New York.
A decade later, the couple opened a physical shop and expanded the business from apartment-style client meetings to pop-up events, wedding packages, and corporate setups. Masanting Sastreria offers “measuring parties” where groups, companies, or couples (on their wedding day) invite the team over to have custom suits.

The brand’s name pays tribute to the couple’s Kapampangan heritage. Masanting is a word used to describe something handsome or beautiful. Meanwhile, the Sampaguita flower logo symbolises the clean yet complex design of Masanting Sastreria’s suits, much like the Sampaguita flower.
“Masanting Sastreria was founded with a vision to elevate Filipino craftsmanship in the tailoring industry,” says Carin. “The inspiration came from a deep appreciation for the artistry and skill inherent in traditional tailoring, coupled with a desire to create a brand that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.
What sets Masanting Sastreria’s suits apart from its competitors is their suitability for the tropical climate of the Philippines. Using some of the finest English and Italian textiles like the Herringbone wool or the Holland & Sherry InterCity fabric, among others, the brand’s suits make their wearer stylish and sleek for corporate events, brunch meetings, garden weddings, and other professional or semi-formal meet-ups. Breathable fabrics rich in hue, Masanting Sastreria’s suits for men and women are known for their versatility and practicality.

The brand’s determination to redefine and elevate the standards of luxury tailoring peers through its commitment to showcasing the talent of Filipino craftsmanship on a global stage. Together with their foremost client, Dan Du, who later joined as a partner because of his fervent belief in the brand’s philosophy, Carin and Mark go to international events and conventions to spread the quality work of their tailors, who have been with them for a long time now.
Besides focusing on fashion and reaching international acclaim, Masanting Sastreria considers itself a social enterprise. “We are committed to uplifting the lives of our tailors by providing them with generous wages, professional growth opportunities, and a supportive work environment,” Mark says. He further shares a success story of one of their tailors, who began working in Masanting Sastreria without prior experience in dressmaking.
“Through our training and mentorship programmes, he has advanced from an apprentice to a senior tailor. This transformation improved his skills and provided better financial stability for his family. Our passion for social entrepreneurship is deeply rooted in our desire to showcase Filipino craftsmanship on a global stage, empowering both our clients and our artisans,” adds Mark.
The brand’s artistry of thoughtful tailoring—a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern practicality—stems from the brand being imbued with gracious hospitality in its company culture. They invite guests over to have a sit-down chat and get to know them personally, hence finding out which of their designs match their personality and functional requirements. This led to Masanting Sastreria having a distinction between its bespoke suits and its signature “Filipino housecut”.
The Filipino housecut has a distinct shape and silhouette that makes its wearer appear slender with enhanced posture. Featuring lightweight fabrics and construction techniques that ensure comfort and breathability, these are designed for tropical weather. This signature style can be given to all clients who want it, “emphasising functionality and comfort without compromising elegance,” says Mark. Meanwhile, they also offer custom-made suits that meet the client’s desired look. That said, Masanting Sastreria wishes for the term ‘bespoke tailoring’ be really true to its meaning and not just a buzzword applied to any tailoring shops that craft custom-made suits.
“Suit is more than just clothing,” says Mark. “It is an expression of individuality and personality. We work closely with our clients to understand their unique stories, styles, and preferences, which we then incorporate into the design of their suits. This personal approach allows us to create pieces that truly reflect the wearer's identity.”
Besides sourcing its fabrics from international suppliers, the business also supports local industries by incorporating Filipino textiles and techniques into its designs, thus maintaining a strong cultural connection.
“Our adherence to international quality standards is evident in our meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, which ensures that each suit we produce is of the highest calibre,” Carin says.

Locally and internationally, Masanting Sastreria has received praise for its craftsmanship and innovation. But for Carin, they are most proud of the brand's positive impact on its community of tailors in Kapitolyo through stable employment and career development.
“The fashion industry faces challenges such as sustainability, ethical labour practices, and the need for greater inclusivity,” says Carin. “We address these issues by prioritising sustainable practices in our production processes, such as using eco-friendly materials and reducing waste. We also ensure fair labour practices by providing our tailors with safe working conditions and generous wages. Furthermore, we strive to create inclusive designs that cater to a diverse clientele, celebrating the uniqueness of each individual.”
Masanting Sastreria recently introduced its loyal patrons to its new venture, Studio Sampaguita. This new line focuses on easy-wear pieces while staying true to its commitment to tailored elegance. Studio Sampaguita aims to provide high-quality, comfortable, and stylish pieces that are versatile enough for various occasions. Carin’s involvement in Masanting Sastreria and Studio Sampaguita, which includes overseeing creative direction and overall strategy, reflects her passion for fashion and dedication to promoting Filipino craftsmanship.
“This expansion aims to provide clients with more ways to express their personal style and enjoy the benefits of bespoke tailoring in their everyday lives,” Carin shares with much excitement. “Our patrons can expect the same level of craftsmanship and personalised service that they have come to trust from Masanting Sastreria,” she adds.
Seeing a client wear a Masanting Sastreria suit with confidence and pride is incredibly rewarding for both Carin and Mark. “It validates our commitment to quality and reinforces our belief in the transformative power of well-crafted clothing. What keeps us constantly improving is our dedication to our clients and our desire to push the boundaries of tailoring, combining traditional techniques with innovative designs. We are always seeking new ways to enhance the client experience and ensure that each piece we create is a testament to our brand’s values,” Carin shares.
With the fashion industry constantly evolving and gearing towards more sustainable, innovative, and inclusive practices, the Masanting Sastreria wishes to continue playing an active role in the country’s bespoke tailoring community. “There is a strong sense of camaraderie and mutual support among tailoring shops as we all strive to showcase the talent and skill of Filipino artisans. We are proud to be part of this dynamic community and are committed to contributing to its continued growth and success,” Carin concludes.
