More than a famous surname, Leah Dou has built her own creative legacy through music, artistry and style as Chanel’s House ambassador

A scroll through Leah Dou’s Instagram feels like stepping into the world of a true creative. A mix of music, acting, fashion and the little moments that inspire her along the way. The Chinese singer-songwriter, actress and visual artist may not yet be a household name to everyone, but she has quietly built a reputation as one of Asia’s most intriguing creative figures. Known for her introspective music, experimental approach and effortlessly understated style, Dou has created a career that goes beyond the traditional image of a pop star.

Born Dou Jingtong in Beijing, Dou first entered the spotlight through her music, releasing her debut album in 2016. While her name carries a significant legacy as the daughter of Hong Kong music icon Faye Wong and Chinese rock musician Dou Wei, Leah has spent years carving out a creative identity of her own.

Growing up surrounded by the artistic world, Dou was exposed to different creative influences and forms of expression from an early age. Through songwriting, she found a way to channel her thoughts and experiences while building an identity beyond the expectations attached to her famous surname.

In 2016, Dou released her debut album Stone Café, introducing audiences to her alternative sound and introspective approach to music. The album’s title was inspired by a college canteen of the same name located above the classroom she attended while studying at an art school in California, reflecting the personal experiences and environments that shaped her creative journey. Through her songs, Dou explores themes of identity, emotions and personal experiences, creating work that feels deeply personal rather than designed to follow trends.

Beyond music, Dou has also continued to explore different forms of creativity. In 2019, she appeared in the Chinese film The Eleventh Chapter, directed by Chen Jianbin. The film follows the story of a theatre director revisiting a controversial case from the past, exploring themes of family, relationships and unresolved emotions. Dou played Yu Xiaoxiao, a young woman navigating the complexities of her family’s history, offering audiences a different side of her artistry beyond songwriting.

In interviews, Dou shared that she has always enjoyed the art of performance, describing the experience of stepping into another character as a “sense of liberation”. For her, acting became another way to explore emotions and perspectives beyond her own.

This same individuality can also be seen in her personal style. She is the definition of effortlessly cool; her style is definitely understated and distinctive. Whether through her music, acting or fashion choices, Dou continues to express herself in a way that feels personal and true to who she is.

In 2024, Leah Dou was named a Chanel House ambassador, marking another milestone in her creative journey. The appointment further cemented her presence in the worlds of fashion and culture, alongside her work as a musician and actress. Since joining the maison, Dou has appeared in Chanel projects, including the Coco Crush fine jewellery campaign, continuing her connection with the brand through her distinctive sense of style and artistic expression. “I feel that being on Singer 2026 has sort of opened up a lot of new perspectives for me,” the creative told Chanel.

From growing up with a celebrated musical legacy to building a name of her own, Leah Dou’s journey reflects an artist who continues to define herself through creativity, individuality and her own voice.
