Find out where today’s cool kids get their fix of trendy and vintage fashion pieces

Don’t let the stories about Gen Z’s online shopping habits fool you. The kids are offline, too, because not even TikTok can take away from the thrill of finding the perfect T-shirt (secondhand, usually) in a good old brick-and-mortar store.

Where do the new generation of fashion obsessives shop, then? Unlike millennials, they do not converge at shopping malls. Instead, their haute haunts are located in lesser-known spots around town, waiting to be discovered in an industrial area, or perhaps hidden in a Housing Development Board (HDB) building. It’s part of the thrill, taking that if-you-know-you-know approach to shopping, especially as other fashion brands have become so accessible.

If you’ve been out of the loop, fret not. Below, we highlight some of the Gen Z-approved fashion stores in Singapore worth checking out if you’re looking for something new to inspire your style.

1. Spades Room

The Mae Building along MacTaggart Road is hardly fashionable, but head up to level 2 and you will discover the cool kid hangout that is Spades Room. Co-founded by a crew of creative 20-somethings, namely Shane Tan, Moh Ee Jin, Greg Tan, and Gloria Liew, Spade Room spotlights emerging fashion brands and streetwear labels from Singapore, as well as equally buzzy ones from around the region. The clothes and accessories come with a Y2K edginess, and that current selection includes graphic tanks, asymmetrical crop tops, baggy pants, and upcycled bags by Singaporean label Stilnook. The store also stocks its own basic pieces under the label Spades, which have been worn by homegrown fashion-forward personalities such as Iman Fandi and Mae Tan. Occasionally, the store also hosts vintage fashion pop-ups and its music party series, Noise.

Spades Room is located at 48 MacTaggart Rd, #02-04 Mae Industrial Building, Singapore 368088.

2. Plop Apparels

Haji Lane may look different from the days when Comme des Garçons’s guerilla store operated there, but it is still very much a hub of hip. One store worth checking out is Plop Apparels, which is located right above the Korean-inspired minimalist café Sooner or Later. The industrial space is home to a selection of independent labels from around the world, as well as vintage pieces. Offering both menswear and womenswear (although the distinction between the two is often irrelevant to Gen Zers), Plop Apparels is your go-to for a great pair of cargo pants that will pool around your ankles, or basic pieces with a utilitarian bent.

Plop Apparels is located at 17 Haji Lane, Singapore 189210.

3. Vintagewknd

Vintagewknd is another Haji Lane haunt that is hard to miss—especially with a rainbow store sign on its façade. That joyful vibe extends to the inside of the store, which brims with pre-loved and upcycled pieces that are heavy on colours, prints, and tie-dye. For something truly special, you can check out the store’s unique upcycled pieces designed by co-founder Eileen Tan, which currently includes corsets made from curtain fabrics and painted denim skirts.

Vintagewknd is located at 41 Haji Lane, Singapore 189234.

4. Loop Garms

An unmistakable staple of the Gen Z closet is the oversized vintage T-shirt, and Loop Garms is a trusty supplier. The store’s selection of graphic tees (and polo shirts, jackets and hoodies) are of the sort that your dad would have worn in the ‘90s—and may very well have been, considering that many of these pieces are thrifted from around the world. Express your (ironic) allegiance to a sports team, ‘90s band, TV show, or American corporation with a Loop Garms find. Not into any of those things? You’re bound to find something else that’s worthy of your wardrobe, like a vintage Nike windbreaker or a Carhartt coat.

Loop Garms is located at 635 Veerasamy Road, #01-148, Singapore 200635.

5. Stakeout

For a wider range of vintage offerings, Loop Garms’ sister brand Stakeout is your best bet—and it’s only a few doors down from the former shop. Leather jackets, Levi’s jeans, mohair cardigans, plaid skirts and Polo Ralph Lauren rugby shirts cardigans are just some of the pre-loved pieces that you can discover in the store, which is fashioned like the Japanese vintage clothing stores that co-founders FJ and Isaac Ang frequented on their travels. Stakeout encourages customers to get out of their comfort zone and experiment with their style—hence the fun curation of clothes—and if that doesn’t capture the Gen Z attitude to dressing up, we don’t know what does.

Loop Garms is located at 635 Veerasamy Road, #01-154, Singapore 200635.
