A guide to pulling off 2000s fashion trends, according to the stylish K-pop star
Since their debut in 2022, New Jeans have distinguished themselves from other K-pop girl groups with their colourful Y2K aesthetic, seen in music videos for their hit songs like OMG and Cookie. Each member has showcased their unique take on the era’s eclectic looks, including the girl group’s youngest member (or maknae in Korean), Hyein.
Although she was born in 2008, the New Jeans singer has certainly proven that she knows her 2000s fashion trends. Her edgy red carpet outfits take cues from the oft-referenced sci-fi film, The Matrix, as well as the decade’s beloved pop stars, like Christina Aguilera. Hyein is also often spotted with must-have accessories like mini bags, beanies and belly chains which were originally popularised by 2000s fashion icons such as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.
It’s little wonder that Hyein has already been recognised as a Gen Z style star by French fashion house Louis Vuitton, who named the then-14-year-old as a brand ambassador in 2022.
Ahead of the New Jeans singer’s birthday, we look back at some of Hyein’s best Y2K fashion moments.

1. Blokecore
Regardless of their actual interest in sports, celebrities like Bella Hadid and Blackpink’s Lisa have added the football jersey into their wardrobe, nailing the “blokecore” fashion trend that takes cues from the style of actual soccer fans. At an event in Tokyo, Hyein put a gothic twist on the look by pairing her sporty, oversized tee with her tough-as-nails Noir Kei Ninomiya x Hunter Original studded rain boots.
