Following presentations in South Korea and India, Dior continues to seek exotic destinations to showcase its collections. For its cruise 2024 fashion show, the French fashion brand turns to Mexico, the Latin American country that once inspired its founder Christian Dior.
In 1954, the couturier introduced the “H-Line”, a straight silhouette that flattened the bosom—much to the dismay of the fashion press at the time—and featured a slightly cinched waist, as well as an equal width for the hip and shoulders. Among the couture creations through which Dior unveiled this controversial silhouette was the “Mexico” cocktail dress, crafted with black silk and ornate gold metallic thread embroidery that seemed to nod to the geometric patterns of a traditional Mexican dress.

Dior’s current designer, Maria Grazia Chiuri, has a penchant for digging up the maison’s archival designs and reinterpreting them for the modern day. Whether the Mexico dress is on her mood board for her upcoming cruise 2024 collection is anybody’s guess, although Chiuri did explore the country’s culture herself for Dior’s cruise 2019 collection, which paid tribute to Mexico’s “escaramuza” sport comprising all-women horseback riders.
In that vein, we do know for sure that Chiuri intends to honour the local craft traditions and culture of Mexico with her latest cruise collection.
“Through this exciting dialogue, the creative director will highlight the artistry and some of the emblematic figures of this country that has been dear to Dior’s heart since the beginning of the house in 1947,” shared Dior in a statement.
