Asia's Most Stylish: An Interview With Angus Tsui, The Futurist

Tatler showcased the most fashionable individuals from Hong Kong on the recently revealed Asia's Most Influential: Style list, and we spoke to Angus Tsui to find out his view on the future of fashion

Tsui pushes our understanding of sustainability in fashion design. His visual interpretations of futurism become urgent with zero-waste, up-cycling, and reconstruction techniques. In fact, his work uses excess fabric sourced from Hong Kong social enterprises, as well as environmentally friendly ink for digital printing.

He also walks the talk—Tsui launched educational charity project ANCares, which works with NGOs to develop sustainability skills via workshops; and he has worked with Cathay Pacific and H&M to create uniforms and accessories consciously. On the personal style front, he favours bold, clean silhouettes by the likes of Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton; his looks have made him one of Hong Kong’s fastest-rising Instagram stars.

1. How would you describe your personal style?

Experimental. I love pushing the boundaries of what we call ‘menswear’ by translating different colours, exciting patterns and silhouettes into the looks that men normally wouldn’t wear.

2. What a fashion Instagram account you're currently obsessed with?

SAFA SAHIN (@safasahinn). He is the mastermind behind Balmain sneaker designs, and his futuristic and otherworldly aesthetics are truly inspiring.

3. What is your favourite fashion memory and why?

When we presented our latest SS22 collection “xenogenesis” with Fashion Hong Kong in September. It was the first physical runway show since the pandemic began and we were so excited to showcase our designs in our beloved hometown!

4. What is an item in your closet that holds lot of sentimental value?

There is a metallic cable-knit sweater that my mother hand-knitted using the leftover yards from my first knitwear collection, and it really means a lot to my design journey.

5. What is the most unusual item in your closet?

A pair of Mugler iconic embossed trousers. From Thierry Mugler to MUGLER, the brand has always influenced my design aesthetics as well as pattern cutting techniques, the trousers is undoubtedly a collectible item you need to have in your wardrobe.

6. What is fashion faux pas you've committed that still makes you cringe?

Over accessorising. I love collecting unique jewels and accessories, and sometimes we just want to put everything on. Turns out it detracts from your outfit, so less is always more!

7. What's something you wish you could change about the fashion world?

Over consumption. Our industry creates so much waste everyday and consumers keep buying things that they don’t really need. I believe that education is truly one of the solutions to change people’s mindset and consumption habits. My team and I have been working so hard to advocate the concept of sustainable living through the collaborations with corporations, charities and social organisations.
