Drunk Elephant founder Tiffany Masterson shares the best way to use Ceramighty AF Eye Balm

It's no secret that ageing starts with the eyes. If you're not getting enough sleep or overexposed to the sun, they show up as crow's feet, wrinkles, and puffiness around the delicate skin around the eyes.

American skincare brand Drunk Elephant has been building an arsenal of products to help combat this, including the C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream, and Shaba Complex Eye Serum.

Its latest is the Ceramighty AF Eye Balm, created specifically to tackle dryness and the resulting itchiness, fine lines, and loss of volume. It is formulated for the most sensitive skin, including those suffering from eczema and psoriasis. But many are hesitant to add yet another step to their skincare routine, especially with the increasingly popular idea that eye creams are just repackaged moisturisers.

Founder of Drunk Elephant, Tiffany Masterson addresses the nuances of that narrative and shares the importance of having a formula specifically designed for the eye area. "You can technically use your facial moisturiser around your eye area, but having a separate eye-area formula is important if the need of that skin is different than those of your face. If you need more moisture, for example, then you would want to opt for an eye treatment that was much richer than your facial moisturiser."

What’s the difference between an eye balm and an eye cream?

The difference all comes down to the intensity of moisture, texture, and reparative benefits. Eye creams are a broad category, with varying textures and benefits; it can be a challenge to find what you’re looking for if your main concerns are finding the most moisture and repair. Eye balms are a much more specialised group of formulas, all of which are more targeted to the concern of deep moisture, ultra-luxurious textures, soothing, and strengthening of the skin barrier.

What are ceramides and how does the under-eye skin benefit from this ingredient?

The role of ceramides in skincare products is to help fill in the spaces between skin cells, giving them elasticity. When skin is chronically dry, that means it has a shortage of the substances responsible for maintaining a healthy barrier, of which ceramides, fatty acids, and lipids are all major components.

Ceramighty is a highly specialised formula targeting those specific concerns, and it contains quite a high concentration of them as well. Traditionally, skincare products use 0.3 per cent to 1.0 per cent  of ceramides, as they are quite effective even in lower amounts. Ceramighty, however, uses them at three percent concentration, making this an incredibly effective formula at repairing delicate, dry, and irritated skin around the eye area.

How should one apply Ceramighty AF Eye Balm for best results?

You can apply Ceramighty around the entire eye area—on lids, under and around. Beyond that, experiment to find the frequency that works for you. You may find that you prefer to use Ceramighty at night, and a lighter formula (like Shaba or C-Tango) during daytime.

Is there a smoothie you like to create with Ceramighty AF Eye Balm?

Mixing in a drop or two of A-Gloei is a wonderful way to get the maximum level of moisture for skin, while also targeting fine lines and wrinkles.
