Time to get A-Gloei-ing for 2022 with Drunk Elephant's latest, gentlest retinol formula yet

Let's talk about anti-ageing. Or more-specifically, anti anti-ageing.

With so many terminologies and trends in skincare being touted about on every advertising platform, such as anti-wrinkle, skin-tightening-firming-or-lifting, we've come to a point where the natural process of ageing is now synonymous with losing one's beauty, appeal and youth. It's become such a frightening prospect that we start piling on every single product available, from serums, oils, masks, moisturisers and machinery—the list is long.

While there isn't necessarily a right or wrong way to one's skincare routine if we went by the 'if it works, it ain't broke' rule, ageing can also be graceful and beautiful.

Drunk Elephant's founder Tiffany Masterson is a firm believer in this and shares what it means to age as well as the A-Gloei Maretinol Oil and how to maximise its retinol experience.

How did you come to create a product that mixes both retinol and marula oil?

Before I created the A-Gloei, I used to mix my retinol and marula oil—both of which were still separate products then. One day, when I told my son to mix a little of the A-Passioni retinoil cream in his marula oil for his acne, he looked at me and said, 'Why not just make a product that has both of these ingredients?'

That got me thinking about the way people see retinol and how they fear it, which is why most don't want to use something as strong as A-Passioni.

Where does the fear of retinol come from?

Like any ingredient, especially active ones that are created to target specific skin concerns, there's a learning curve that comes with them. So when people experience peeling, experience redness and irritation while using any kind of retinol, that's your skin telling you you're going too fast for it to get used to the product. People mistake this irritant response as exfoliation, which is why they get spooked and stop using it altogether.

Another cause of irritation may be the ingredients they're paired with, namely essential oils, fragrances, dyes, and drying alcohols. All of which can put your skin into a sensitised, reactive state that is less tolerant towards otherwise beneficial actives. We call these the 'Suspicious 6', and they're common culprits for exacerbating skin behaviours like breakouts, dryness or excessive oiliness.

And what does that learning curve entail?

It's essentially a process that allows your skin to slowly adjust to the active retinol, say from twice a week to daily use. To bypass that and alleviate people's fears of retinol, we wanted to introduce a beginner's retinol so that everyone can experience its incredible benefits, which is what A-Gloei is made for.

What's the difference between the A-Passioni Retinol Cream and the A-Gloei Maretinol Oil? How do you use both?

The biggest difference between the two is their concentration of retinol. While the A-Passioni 1.0 per cent retinol cream is our high-strength formula, addressing more stubborn skin concerns like scarring or hyperpigmentation, that degree of potency also means that it's trickier to incorporate in your routine. For those who want to use the A-Passioni, there's a brief acclimation period where you'll need to be more cautious about mixing it with other actives, like AHA/BHA exfoliants or Vitamin C.

As for the A-Gloei, it has a retinol concentration of 0.5 per cent and a base that's made of a mix of 95 per cent virgin marula oil as well as ceramides. This makes it a far more flexible, forgiving formula that can fit into any routine, regardless of the other products that you're using. You can mix it with any of our serums, moisturisers, hydrators or even our eye treatments. A lower concentration of retinol means you have precise control over the A-Gloei's dosage.

Is the A-Gloei Maretinol Oil a beginner-friendly retinol?

Yes. It requires little to no 'ramp-up' period like most retinols, and is thus a perfect entry-level product. And just because it is a gentle formula, that doesn't mean it's less effective or too mild to produce positive results. What's more, it plays well with other actives as well.

In your 2018 interview with Vox, you mentioned how Drunk Elephant is a 'pro-skin' brand and not an anti-ageing one. What does pro-skin mean?

Pro-skin means creating a formula that directly benefits the skin while being safe and effective. That means no essential oils, fragrances, silicones, dyes or drying alcohols. We don't care about making our formulations appealing for marketing purposes. Making it smell good, look nice or feel silky smooth aren't our main priorities—it's using great ingredients and getting real benefits from them. Our philosophy is giving your skin a diet-cleanse, removing the ingredients that are giving you issues and resetting it back to its healthiest state.

And there's no such thing as anti-ageing as ageing is an inevitable process. The only thing we can do is to age gracefully. Instead of using ingredients that cause pre-mature ageing, we need only ingredients that support and nourish our skin.
