1. Protect your skin with sunscreen

For Dr Reyes, the most important step you can take is to use sunscreen daily. She emphasises that UV damage is responsible for up to 80 per cent of visible ageing and significantly increases the risk of skin cancer.
She recommends using a broad-spectrum SPF 40 or higher every morning, even if you’re indoors (UVA rays can penetrate windows).
“Reapply every two to three hours you’re outdoors. Prevention is always easier than trying to reverse damage later,” she says.
2. Keep it simple but consistent

Dr Reyes says one doesn’t need a 10-step routine. Instead, prioritise products that address your specific concerns and stick to them. She adds that a ‘solid routine’ includes:
- Cleanser: Gentle, non-stripping, to cleanse without irritating.
- Moisturiser: Keeps your skin barrier healthy and hydrated.
- Treatment: Add one active ingredient to target concerns like acne (e.g., salicylic acid), pigmentation (e.g., vitamin C), or ageing (e.g., retinol). More isn’t always better. Overloading your skin with too many activities can lead to irritation and setbacks.

3. Listen to your skin

Your skin is constantly changing—due to age, hormones, environment, and stress. What works in your 20s may not work in your 40s, so adjusting your routine as needed is essential. “If your skin feels tight, it’s probably dehydrated; if it’s breaking out, look for triggers like diet, stress, or products clogging your pores,” Dr Reyes says. “Pay attention to how your skin reacts, and don’t hesitate to seek professional advice if needed.”

“While I love seeing advancements like exosomes and regenerative medicine in skincare, remember that these are add-ons, not replacements,” Dr Reyes asserts. The basics—cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection—lay the foundation. Advanced treatments are the cherry on top, but they won’t work if your basics aren’t in place.
5. Invest in prevention, not just correction

Some people begin their skincare journey until they see the signs of ageing. “My advice? Start early,” says Dr Reyes. She recommends antioxidants like vitamin C to fight free radicals, retinoids to boost collagen, and hydration to maintain elasticity.
“Prevention is always more effective (and cost-efficient) than correction,” she says.
