Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum 2024
The Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum 2024, held on September 9-10 at the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong, explored the Delivering Impactful Philanthropy in the Real World theme. Building on a successful legacy since its launch in 2016, the forum has featured 195 speakers from diverse backgrounds and attracted participants from more than 20 countries and regions. The HKJC Charities Trust convened the event in association with the Institute of Philanthropy.
On September 10, more than 100 guests gathered for the closing plenary session which explored why communities should be investing in the arts and sports. The panel featured screenwriter and director Dustin Lance Black, Olympic diver Tom Daley, jockey Vincent Ho Chak-yiu and filmmaker Ruby Yang. The panellists discussed the transformative power of arts and sports in fostering holistic development and community well-being. The speakers emphasised that investing in arts and sports yields a high social return on investment, enhancing not only individual growth but also broader cultural and societal advancements.
Black said: “If you live in a city or country that wants to be on the cutting edge of the future, you need to encourage innovation. If you want to instil the values of innovation in young people, you need to invest in the arts.” The panel dove into the impact of investing in sports and the arts on societies and cultures and how these industries give back to the community.
