At the Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders on 1 April, Vietravel Airlines officially appointed Do Vinh Quang, the youngest son of Mr. Do Quang Hien, as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the 2025–2030 term. Coming from a family steeped in business tradition, Quang quickly demonstrated his leadership abilities through significant roles at T&T Group and Hanoi Football Club. In light of the many challenges facing Vietravel Airlines, the question now is whether his experience and determination will enable him to steer the airline “backwards” and lead it to new successes.

Who is Do Vinh Quang?
Do Vinh Quang was born in 1995, the youngest son of Do Quang Hien, Chairman of SHB Bank. A prominent figure in Hanoi’s business circles, Quang impressed with his solid academic credentials, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance from City University (UK) and a Master’s degree in Financial Management from Middlesex University (UK).
After completing his studies in the UK in 2018, Quang returned to Vietnam to follow in his father’s footsteps. He began his career at T&T Group as an investment management specialist, handling responsibilities such as analysing, appraising, and evaluating investment opportunities, financial M&As, and real estate investments. Through years of hard work and gaining experience across various management roles, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and Deputy General Director of T&T Group by mid-2022.

It is also well known that this Hanoi “young master” has a particular passion for football. In 2015, at just 20 years old, he played a key role in bringing Manchester City to Vietnam for a friendly match. By 2020, Quang became Chairman of Hanoi FC Football Club—the most successful team in the history of the V.League, with numerous championships, National Cup, and National Super Cup titles. His appointment made him the youngest Chairman in the history of Vietnamese football. Combining financial expertise with a love for sport, he has steadily advanced the club’s operations. Despite the intense pressure of his young age, Quang is candid about his ambition to elevate the club to the continental level in the near future. He hopes to inject a fresh wave of youthful energy into the team while continuing to build on its legacy.
In addition, Quang has significant investments in the real estate and sports sectors through T&T Group, notably in Hanoi Sports Joint Stock Company—T&T, where he serves as Chairman of the Board and oversees youth football training centres. With a fortune estimated at around VND1,500 billion from SHB shares and other investments, he has proven both his financial acumen and sharp investment insight. In an interview, Quang candidly admitted, “It is definitely not just pressure, but a very big pressure for me. However, I believe that pressure must be turned into motivation.”
The “reversal” challenge for the new president
After four years of operation, Vietravel Airlines, despite establishing a network connecting domestic and international tourist destinations, continues to face substantial challenges. Operational performance has fallen short of expectations, and according to data from the Civil Aviation Authority, it was the airline with the fewest flights in the market during the first two months of 2025.
In particular, the fleet, comprising just one dry-leased narrow-body aircraft, presents a significant challenge in terms of competitiveness and profitability. A profitable airline typically requires a fleet of at least 30 aircraft, creating a vast gap between the ideal and the reality at Vietravel Airlines. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese aviation market is dominated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet, both with large fleets and ambitious expansion plans. Other carriers, such as Bamboo Airways and Pacific Airlines, are also struggling to rebuild their fleets after a period of decline. With only one operational aircraft, Vietravel Airlines is clearly at a disadvantage. The high cost of leasing aircraft, coupled with debts owed to service providers—ranging from airports to ground services, catering, and fuel—further complicates matters.

Vietravel Airlines’ flight network, while linking attractive destinations, has been marred by reliability issues. Frequent cancellations, as well as changes to flight times and dates, have left many customers wary, negatively impacting the airline’s reputation and revenue. Despite offering competitive fares online, the uncertainty surrounding schedules has become a significant barrier to growth.
In this context, Do Vinh Quang, as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors, faces a formidable challenge. Revitalising Vietravel Airlines will require a comprehensive and bold strategy. He will need to address the issues of fleet size, schedule reliability, and rebuild customer trust. In addition, debt management and cost optimisation will be critical in getting the airline back on track.
Future Expectations
Under the leadership of Do Vinh Quang, and with strong backing from T&T Group, Vietravel Airlines faces promising opportunities for transformation. Upon taking office, the new Chairman outlined a clear vision for the airline’s next development phase, with the key focus in the near term being the implementation of a comprehensive restructuring strategy. This will include standardising the management system, enhancing the quality of human resources, expanding the fleet, and increasing both domestic and international routes.
Moreover, T&T Group’s commitment, as voiced by Chairman Do Quang Hien, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the sustainable development of Vietravel Airlines. The airline is positioned as a key link in the aviation ecosystem being built by the group, connecting with major infrastructure projects such as Quang Ninh Port, Quang Tri Airport, and logistics hubs. The long-term ambition is not only to become Vietnam’s leading airline but also to expand into the regional market, with a strategic vision for future growth.

2025 is expected to be a banner year for the global aviation industry, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. This presents a golden opportunity for Vietravel Airlines to capitalise on its competitive advantages, expand its network, and improve service quality. With the leadership of the new Chairman and the support of T&T Group, the airline has the chance to strengthen its financial position, expand partnerships, and enhance Vietnam's air transport capacity.
According to the latest reports, the new Board of Directors will work in tandem with Vietravel Airlines to implement a series of coordinated measures, including restructuring efforts, the standardisation of management systems, and the development of high-quality human resources. The goal is to increase the fleet size, expand the domestic flight network, and foster cooperation and joint ventures to develop international routes, ultimately shaping a green, professional, modern, and sustainable airline.
