Abu Dhabi is preparing to welcome one of the UAE’s most anticipated cultural institutions in December 2025, a museum that promises to reshape how people understand the nation’s storied past

Within Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, the Zayed National Museum is set to debut on December 3, 2025. This upcoming cultural landmark captures the spirit of the UAE’s cultural journey, bridging ancient human history with the vision of a modern nation.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster, the museum stands as both a tribute and a testament to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father, whose lifelong pursuit of knowledge and unity remains the foundation of the UAE’s identity.

The journey into Zayed National Museum begins not indoors but outdoors, along the magnificent Al Masar Garden. This 600-metre outdoor gallery stretches from the Saadiyat coast, weaving between Louvre Abu Dhabi and the forthcoming Natural History Museum, introducing visitors to the very landscapes that shaped life in the UAE.

In this meditative prelude, which sets the tone for discovery, native plants and trees representing desert, oasis and urban environments create a natural sanctuary, while a working falaj irrigation system speaks to centuries of ingenious water management.

The museum’s narrative unfolds across six thoughtfully conceived permanent galleries, each one a chapter in an evolving story. Our Beginning opens with Sheikh Zayed’s life through archival photographs, film and intimate personal objects, while Through Our Nature immerses visitors in the UAE’s diverse ecosystems—mountains, deserts, oases and seas—exploring how geography has sustained life across millennia.

To Our Ancestors ventures back 300,000 years, unveiling archaeological treasures including one of the world’s oldest pearls, while Through Our Connections traces the development of Arabic language and the dawn of Islam.

By Our Coasts celebrates five centuries of maritime heritage, from the legendary navigator Ibn Majid to pearl divers of yesteryear, and finally, To Our Roots explores the traditional customs and practices that defined inland Emirati communities, delving into the nation’s intangible cultural wealth.

Where history meets innovation

The museum distinguishes itself through the way it brings history to life. Its collection of more than 3,000 pieces, with 1,500 on display, is remarkable, yet it’s the storytelling that leaves a lasting impression. Audiovisual installations, sensory environments and contemporary artistic interventions turn galleries into living spaces rather than static displays.

Archaeological artefacts share space with multimedia works and immersive dioramas, creating a dialogue between past and present that feels immediate and alive. Here, heritage isn’t sealed behind glass—it moves, speaks and continues to shape identity.

Foster’s architectural approach also embodies this philosophy. The design allows generous natural light to flood the spaces, creating an environment where the objects themselves become the protagonists.

Beyond its galleries, the Zayed National Museum anchors a new cultural landscape for Abu Dhabi. Within the Saadiyat Cultural District, it stands among world-class neighbours—Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and soon, the Guggenheim and Natural History Museum—forming one of the most dynamic concentrations of museums anywhere in the world.

Together, they turn Abu Dhabi into a crossroads of ideas, a place where dialogue, exchange and discovery continue to shape the story of the UAE.
