Hotel review: The newly refurbished Grand Hyatt Singapore is a tranquil sanctuary in the bustling city

Newly designed rooms reflect Singapore’s “City in Nature” identity and come decked in soothing neutral tones, ice-green marble accents and elegant wooden furnishings, evoking a calm and resort-like ambience.

On top of classic rooms and suites, the property has introduced a new room option, Garden Studio. Previously a part of the spa, these elegant rooms have been fully transformed into a tropical oasis. With only five available throughout the entire hotel, we were told that these studios are in high demand and typically fully booked.

Spanning 645sq ft, the studio-styled guestroom boasts high ceilings, a lavish en suite bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe and more. The hotel’s resort-like design continues into the studio, offering a peaceful and relaxing ambience. Adding to the resort-like vibe, the studio guestrooms are surrounded by greenery and offer direct access to the gardens and pools, which made us forget we were right in the heart of Orchard Road.

Sustainability efforts are also evident within the rooms. For one, suites and Garden Studios offer drinking water faucets, with a new automated in-house water bottling plant set to provide water in reusable glass bottled water in all rooms in the coming months. Light and air conditioning preferences also revert to your last used setting every time you return to your room.

The hotel offers a range of facilities that we couldn’t wait to check out. Staying at the Garden Studio, our first stop was naturally the pool. Walking through the garden and to the pool area, we found plenty of bird’s nest daybeds and cabanas dotted around the area, making the perfect spots to relax. On top of a semi-Olympic pool, the property is also home to a hydro-massage saltwater pool surrounded by lush greenery. The area is also used for guided wellness sessions that will be available for guests in the future.

While walking to our room, we walked past the wellness centre and noticed the lavish gym—so we stopped in to take a look. The gym is well equipped to say the least, with dumbbells available up to 40kg and fitness machines like the ski ergs which are not typically found in hotel gyms.

Next to the gym, the reimagined wellness centre Damai Spa offers elevated experiences featuring science-backed therapeutic rituals. It’s only set to open later in the year and we’re already planning our return to try out the new facility.

During our stay, we had to indulge in the property’s beloved Italian restaurant Pete’s Place. The fan-favourite restaurant also underwent renovations and now features a new private dining room, a wine cellar and a chef’s table that offers an off-the-menu experience. We got to delight in hearty plates of pasta, pizza and meats.

The costoletta alla Milanese was a favourite—great for sharing, the dish highlights tender veal chop breaded and fried until beautifully golden brown and crisp.  It’s accompanied by rocket salad and roasted potatoes. While we were too full after our mains, our friendly waiter told us that the Pete’s tiramisu is the best way to end the meal. The indulgent treat comes layered with mascarpone and savoiardi biscuits.

The next morning, we were treated to an extensive breakfast spread at StraitsKitchen. Like Pete’s Place, the nostalgic restaurant returned with refreshed interiors while keeping its vibrant ambience. With a wide selection of local and international breakfast fare, we had plenty of options. Highlights include organic congee made with organic Japanese rice and sweet potato; egg station offering cafe-free eggs prepared to your preference; and nasi lemak topped with chicken rendang, sambal cafe-free egg and otah otah. While we were here for breakfast, we were told that all-time favourites including the chilli crab, butter chicken and laksa would be available for lunch.

Being located in the heart of the city means the property is just a stone’s throw away from indulgent food, shopping malls and more. Make the most of the hotel’s convenient location by exploring the area.

During our stay, we realised we forgot to bring some toiletries. Fortunately, several convenience and grocery stores are located close to the hotel, which made it easy for us to get what we needed.
