When it comes to grand enigmatic cocktail lounges in Singapore, time-tested establishments like Manhattan and Atlas are cardinal picks. After all, it is a place for those who want to see and be seen. Enter Dragonfly, an illustrious art-nouveau bar that recently unfurled its wings in the heart of Orchard Road at the chic Vibe Hotel Singapore Orchard.
Having first captivated Hong Kong with its opulent bohemian grandeur, it is poised to do the same in the Lion City with a visually arresting outpost that fuses art, design and mixology.

opulent bohemian grandeur
Thanks to celebrated bar designer Ashley Sutton, one can’t help but marvel at the stained glass dragonfly centrepiece towering behind the bar as soon as they enter. His vision, combining ornate patterns, natural motifs and mesmerising hues, imbues the velvet-clad space, especially the ceilings which are lined with hundreds of hand-blown wing-patterned lamps inspired by the 19th-century art mogul Louis Comfort Tiffany—the first art director of Tiffany & Co. Expect a flurry of Instagrammable moments in this joint.

Captivating as the aesthetics are, the modern cocktail programme deserves equal limelight. The menu, titled Cause and Effect, sees bar manager Morgan Raelin Barron inject her American bartending flair while championing a library of classic cocktails. Having earned her stripes at well-respected American bars Allegory and BarMini, Raelin checked into Singapore, straight into the award-winning ranks of Jigger & Pony and 28 HongKong Street. Now at Dragonfly, she intends to translate and represent the progression from classic cocktails to modern-day originals.

Above Every Cloud is a riff on the classic bamboo cocktail
And it is observed in each drink, which anchors onto a base spirit and guides imbibers through familiar classics and rather imaginative creations. Start with the Bite the Blossom, a crushable vodka highball rife with grapefruit, white flowers, rhubarb and a splash of Oloroso sherry. For a silkier gin-based number, the clarified Veil of Fondness promises sweet and savoury sensations, thanks to the clever juxtaposition of tomato and watermelon with a maltier base of genever. Or sip on Every Cloud, riffing on the classic bamboo, which delivers surgically clean flavours with an aromatic nose.

Decadent nightcaps such as Murphy’s Law, are quaffable desserts in a glass. A base of house-crafted dark rum, swirls of sweet corn ice cream and drops of mala oil make for a rich yet delicately piquant tipple. So is Everything Gets Butter, a toothsome brown-butter-washed bourbon old-fashioned.
Beyond the booze, the cocktail lounge extends its allure with a curated roster of live music and DJ nights. From soulful blues to rhythmic jazz, the distinctive escapade promises those seeking a sophisticated after-hours escapade.
