Planning a trip in 2022 but not sure where to go? Find out which destinations Hongkongers are booking for a trip next year

If Hong Kong’s airport tells you about the city is that it’s a top destination for many travellers—it’s one of the busiest airports in the world, at least pre-pandemic. With the current 21-day quarantine requirement, getting into the city is much harder. But once normal travel returns, we can count on Hongkongers hopping on a plane for a quick weekend getaway or curing their travel blues by travelling further away.

Travel has been off the cards for many in the past two years but there’s some silver lining in 2022. According to Expedia’s recent vaccination and travel survey, Hongkongers are optimistic and ready to travel overseas in the coming year. In fact, more are looking forward to taking an international trip, with the majority saying that are planning a trip in 2022.

1. London

Catherine So: The relaxation of quarantine restrictions for travellers from Hong Kong to the United Kingdom has certainly played a positive role in placing London as a top searched destination, according to Expedia’s search data. Over the years, London has ranked among the top ten searched destinations, but its attraction to appeal to the higher education sector has pushed its position to the top of the search list for 2021.

2. Tokyo and Osaka

So: Hongkongers love a good food leisure travel and have consistently ranked Tokyo and Osaka as their top favourites. The combination of fine dining, with the option to explore the hidden gems of Tokyo streets, coupled with the excitement of shopping, sightseeing or a relaxing onsen experience, make both these cities in Japan a top ten destination of choice for our travellers.

3. Bangkok

So: Continuing the trend of food travel, Bangkok is another favourite choice for Hongkongers, with the additional appeal of a spa-cation. The recent introduction of a quarantine-free entry into Bangkok saw a brief search hike on Expedia, with optimistic travellers looking forward to a window of opportunity for their Thai culinary fix when borders reopen in the near future.

4. Staycation in Hong Kong

So: In the absence of international travel, the staycation trend continues to be the choice of travel escape for vacation deprived Hong Kongers. Staycationers today seek a total experience today, with luxury stays, family-centric packages and stays that include restaurant offers have emerged to be the top choices for the year.

5. Paris

So: Bonjour Paris! Expedia’s Global 2022 Travel Trends Report highlights that two-thirds (67 per cent) of those surveyed in Hong Kong are planning to go big on their next trip with a new ‘no regrets’ style of travel, which Expedia has dubbed the ‘GOAT’ (Greatest of All Trips) mindset. Paris, the ‘city of love’, fashion, arts and culture is a top choice for Hongkongers to break that travel deprivation mould in 2022.
