Got the vaccine and a year's worth of holidays saved up? Here are some places around the world that are open to Hong Kong travellers

Itching to travel? With Covid-19 vaccines steadily rolling out around the world, travelling no longer feels like the faraway dream that it used to be. Our team of editors at the Tatler Hong Kong office have been dreaming of this day, even reliving our favourite trips while international travel was still on hold.

Now, more and more countries are opening up their travel regulations for those who are vaccinated, eliminating the need for quarantine and Covid-19 testing proof. If you're planning to get your jab, or have already gotten your vaccine, here are the countries that you can visit today.

Mauritius

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Travellers must be fully vaccinated and get a mandatory PCR test at the airport on the day of arrival. Depending on your length of stay, you may also need a PCR test on day 7 and 14. 

Quarantine Requirements: Vaccinated travellers are allowed to have a 'hotel holiday' at one of the country's Covid-19 safe hotels for the first 14 days where you'll be able to enjoy hotel facilities and relax on the beach—not to be confused with Mauritius' quarantine hotels, where you'll be required to stay in your room. 

Visa Requirements: None required for 90-day stay

Mauritius, located on the southeast coast of the African continent is known for its gorgeous white-sand beaches. The country recently announced its plans to open up to travellers from July 15—but you'll have to follow a special set of arrangements. While vaccinated travellers do not officially need to quarantine, they'll be required to stay within the hotel for a 'hotel holiday' for two weeks.

After two weeks, you'll be free to roam around the rest of the island and go on various adventures such as wildlife excursions and trying authentic Mauritian cuisine.

Portugal

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Travellers must provide one of the following: a negative RT-PCR test or a similar NAAT test 72 hours before boarding, a rapid antigen test 48 hours before boarding, or EU Digital Covid Certificate. 

All passengers are required to fill a Passenger Locator Card before boarding.

Quarantine Requirements: None

Visa Requirements: None required for 90-day stay

Portugal currently allows visitors from Hong Kong for essential and non-essential travel. Masks are mandatory when riding public transport, while other rules and restrictions are still in place at the moment. Restaurants and cafes close at 1am, while alcoholic beverages are limited from 9pm onwards.

Switzerland

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Travellers must show proof of full Covid-19 vaccination, full recovery or a negative PCR test before entry. Visitors must also fill in an entry form before they enter Switzerland. 

Quarantine Requirements: None required as Hong Kong does not have Covid-19 variants of concern as of July 2. 

Visa Requirements: Required

Known for its mesmerising lakes, Alps and milk chocolate, Switzerland's natural scenery is straight out of a movie poster. If you've been hoping to visit this idyllic country, you're in luck. As of June 26, Switzerland has lifted entry restrictions for Hong Kong and Macao residents.

Germany

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Travellers must be fully vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19 to skip mandatory testing and quarantine requirements.

Non-vaccinated travellers need to present a negative Covid test taken no more than 72 hours prior to departure and self-isolate for 10 days. 

Quarantine Requirements: None, if fully vaccinated. 10 days self-isolation for non-vaccinated travellers 

Visa Requirements: None 

Beginning from June 25, Germany allows vaccinated travellers to skip quarantine and testing requirements. However, the relaxed restrictions do not apply to tourists from high-risk countries where variants of concern are clustered. The relaxation of restrictions come just in time as Bavaria reopen its outdoor beer gardens—which means you'll be able to drink your heart out during your visit. 

Currently, Germany only recognises vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency which includes Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna.

Thailand

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Travellers must have an insurance policy that covers treatment for Covid-19 up to the cost of US$100,000, a negative Covid-19 test taken 72 hours before departure, and another test upon arrival. 

Quarantine Requirements: From July, vaccinated travellers are now able to visit Phuket without quarantine. However, if you wish to travel to other parts of Thailand, international travellers are still required to quarantine for 14 days at government-approved or Alternative State Quarantine facilities. 

Visa Requirements: Hong Kong passport holders are exempted from visa requirements and are permitted to stay for up to 45 days.

On July 1, Phuket started its 'Sandbox' programme where fully vaccinated travellers are allowed into Phuket without quarantine. Travellers will need to download a location-tracking app and should not travel to the Thai mainland for two weeks upon arrival. 

Thailand had just begun to ease quarantine restrictions in early April, reducing its quarantine period to 10 days for unvaccinated travellers, and 7 days for vaccinated travellers. However, on April 29 the government has reversed its plans as the third wave of the virus hit the country. Now, all travellers are required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

Seychelles

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: No vaccination requirement for Hong Kong travellers. Negative Covid-19 test taken less than 72 hours before departure and valid travel health insurance to cover potential Covid-19 costs are required.

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required

Visa Requirements: None. However, visitors must apply for entry through the Health Travel Authorisation beforehand

Comprising of 115 picturesque islands in the Indian Ocean, Seychelles is one of the smallest countries while also being the most vaccinated nation in the world at the moment.

While 62.8% of its population is fully vaccinated as of May 6, the number of Covid-19 cases rose from 612 on April 28 to 1,068 on May 8, with the majority of cases coming from Seychellois who are unvaccinated or only had one dose. Due to the sudden case surge, the country has decided to close schools and cancel sporting activities for two weeks starting May 5. 

Seychelles was the first nation to open its borders to vaccinated visitors in January. As the country's own vaccination program rolled out further, the nation welcomed all visitors regardless of vaccination status starting from March. However, due to the rise of Covid variants, those coming from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh now have to be fully vaccinated to allow entry, while those who are coming from South Africa and Brazil are not permitted entry.

Iceland

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: All travellers no matter of origin can enter the country if fully vaccinated (14 days have to have passed from the second dose) or previously infected by Covid-19. As of July 1, travellers with valid vaccination records no longer have to present a negative PCR test. 

Non-vaccinated travellers will have to show a negative Covid test before boarding, taken within 72 hours of departure. All travellers must pre-register prior to arrival and confirm their departure day.  

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required for vaccinated travellers. Non-vaccinated tourists will have to quarantine for five days and take another test at the end of quarantine.

Visa Requirements: Hong Kong passport holders are exempted from a visa. For the full list of countries exempted from a visa, click here.

Witness Iceland's dramatic volcanoes, lava fields and glaciers with your own eyes. As of March 18, fully vaccinated travellers can freely enter the Nordic island nation without quarantine or testing. However, the country only recognises four different vaccine certifications as of May 6, including Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson.

Ecuador

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Vaccinated tourists can enter the country and visit the country's most popular island, the Galapagos Islands.

Non-vaccinated travellers can enter Ecuador with proof of a negative test taken 72 hours before departure, or proof of previous infection.

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required.

Visa Requirements: Hong Kong citizens can stay in Ecuador for up to 90 days without a visa.

With Amazonian rain forests, white-sand beaches and an abundance of wildlife, Ecuador is filled with historic sites as well as modern-day attractions. As of March 17, Ecuador has announced that those who are fully vaccinated can enter the country. Travellers without the vaccine will have to present a negative Covid-19 PCR or an antigen test result that was taken no more than three days before their arrival.

Slovenia

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: As of June 26, Hong Kong is part of Slovenia's green list countries, which means travellers are allowed to enter without vaccination proof, home quarantine or proof of a negative Covid-19 test. Upon entry, visitors must prove that they have resided in the green list country for at least five consecutive days prior to entry. 

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required for tourists coming from Hong Kong.

Located in Central Europe, Slovenia is a mountainous country that's filled with green mountains, ski resorts and emerald-green lakes. While travellers who are on the red list have to go through home quarantine, show valid Covid testing or vaccination proof, Hong Kong is exempted from the requirements, which means you can book your tickets right now and take the next flight there. 

As of June 15, Slovenia has declared the end of the epidemic in the country. From July 3, masks are no longer mandatory at indoor public cultural events, sports events and inside catering establishments. However, masks are still mandatory in other enclosed public spaces. From early July, the capacity limits at cultural and sports events, conferences are raised to 75 per cent, while 100 per cent venue capacity is allowed.

Georgia

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Travellers from all countries travelling by air may enter Georiga if they present documents confirming that they've received two doses of any Covid-19 vaccination.

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required for tourists coming from Hong Kong. 

Visa Requirements: Visa is required for Hong Kong passport holders. If you happen to be a dual citizen from countries such as Singapore, Canada, Australia or the US, you'll be able to enter Georgia without a visa for one full year.

The country Georgia is located in neither Europe nor Asia. Instead, it's part of the Caucasus region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Known for its plantations, Georgian wine, enchanting Caucasin mountains and Khachapuri, a traditional Georgian cheese bread, the country is rich in culture and history. Since February 1, all fully vaccinated travellers have been allowed to enter the country.

Guatemala

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Proof of negative Covid-19 test result or antigen test taken 72 hours or less before arrival, certification which shows your recent Covid-19 recovery in the past three months, or evidence of vaccination required. Travellers have to fill in an online health form. People who have visited Brazil, UK or South Africa within the previous 14 days may be denied entry.

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required

Visa Requirements: Hong Kong citizens can visit Guatemala without a visa for thirty days

Guatemala, a country south of Mexico is home to colourful, antique architecture; museums and art. Previously, the country enacted strict lockdowns and travel restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus. In April, Guatemala enforced restrictions for visitors who have recently been to Brazil, the UK and South Africa as coronavirus variants began to surface.

Belize

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Proof of negative Covid-19 PCR test taken within 96 hours of travel, negative rapid test taken within 48 hours before arrival, or proof of Covid immunisation completed at least two weeks prior to travel is required. If travellers do not have a negative Covid-19 test proof, tests will be available at the Belize airport for US$50 per passenger. 

Travellers are encouraged to complete the Belize Health App within 72 hours upon arrival and international tourists have to book a stay at a Gold Standard hotel and present hotel confirmation at immigration.

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required

Visa Requirements: None required for 90-day stay

Belize opened its first phase of travel starting from May 2020. In October of last year, international travel was reopened and in January 2021, full reopening of the overnight tourism sector began. The country has introduced several travel measures which include the "Safe Corridor" and "Gold Standard" hospitality operators, helping tourists safely navigate through certified restaurants, transportation and support while travelling.

Bahamas

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Fully vaccinated travellers who have passed the two week immunity period are exempted from Covid-19 testing for entry and inter-island travel as of May 1. Unvaccinated travellers must have a negative PCR test result taken maximum of five days prior to arrival. Test results and proof of vaccination must be uploaded to the Bahamas Travel Health Visa ahead of time.

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required

Visa Requirements: A Travel Health Visa is required. Travellers, regardless of their vaccination status, must opt-in to the Covid-19 health insurance. The cost of the insurance will be included in the Bahamas Travel Health Visa application. 

The Bahamas, the world-famous honeymoon spot renowned for its picture-perfect beaches and luxurious resorts have lifted its testing and quarantine requirement. On the island, travellers are required to wear a face mask at high-risk locations where social distancing isn't possible. If travellers are found not wearing face masks in areas where it's required, a US$200 fine or one-month imprisonment—or both—may be enforced.  

Currently, the Bahamas government is only accepting vaccines by Pfizer Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.

Spain

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Fully vaccinated travellers are allowed entry. Both vaccinated and non-vaccinated travellers will have to submit proof of a negative Covid-19 test upon arrival. Travellers are also required to fill out a Health Control Form that can be found from spth.gob.es or download the app on mobile. 

Quarantine Requirements: No quarantine is required

Visa Requirements: None required for 90-day stay

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on May 28 that Spain will allow vaccinated travellers from the U.K. and Japan starting from May 31. From June 7, other international vaccinated tourists will be allowed entry if they have been vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved by the European Medicine Agency.

U.S.A.

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Fully vaccinated travellers are allowed to travel within the United States without Covid-19 testing or quarantine, however, some states and territories may have additional entry requirements

Quarantine Requirements: Varies from each state and territory

Visa Requirements: Required. To learn more, visit the U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau

At the moment, travel restrictions to the U.S. vary from state to state. For those looking to visit the Big Apple, asymptomatic travellers entering from another country, state or territory are not required to quarantine. New York is currently offering tourists one-dose Johnson & Johnson shots at mobile vaccination hubs in popular tourist spots. Learn more about travelling to New York here

Other states that accept vaccinated travellers without quarantine include Alaska, where travellers are also eligible to receive a free Covid-19 vaccine starting from June 1; Washington, DC; Massachusetts; Illinois and more. California is also open to vaccinated travellers, however, non-essential travellers from other states and countries are strongly discouraged from entering California.

Greece

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Fully vaccinated travellers with certification, or those with a negative PCR certificate taken no later than 72 hours before arrival are allowed to enter the country. Travellers who were previously tested positive in the last two to nine months are not required to show negative test proof.

Tourists are required to fill in the Passenger Locator Form (PLF) before arriving in Greece. 

Quarantine Requirements: None

Visa Requirements: None required for 90-day stay

Greece reopened its borders to travellers on May 14, welcoming vaccinated travellers into the country. Currently, Greece recognises the following vaccines: Pfizer BioNtech, Moderna, Astra Zeneca/Oxford, Novavax, Johnson + Johnson/Janssen, Sinovac Biotech, Gamaleya (Sputnik), Cansino Biologics, and Sinopharm.

France

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Hong Kong is currently in France's "green" list of countries where fully vaccinated travellers are not subject to any health measures. 

However, non-vaccinated travellers aged 11 years or older must present a negative PCR test taken less than 72 hours before flying. 

Quarantine Requirements: None

Visa Requirements: None required for 90-day stay

Starting from June 9, France has relaxed its travel restrictions. Hong Kong is currently on France's "green" list, meaning that vaccinated travellers are able to get into the country easily. 

Restrictions are currently in place in metropolitan France. Cultural activities such as cinemas, theatres, show venues, museums, zoos and libraries are open with lowered capacity limit.

Saint Barthélemy

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Proof of vaccination and a negative RT-PCRR Covid-19 test proof are required for entry

Quarantine Requirements: None

Visa Requirements: None required for 90-day stay

Saint Barthélemy, or St. Barts, is a French-speaking island country known for its beaches and designer shops. Currently, St. Barts welcome visitors from their list of "green" and "orange" countries, with Hong Kong listed as an orange-zone city. 

Beaches, restaurants, boutiques and businesses are operating as normal in the country, allowing visitors to fully relax during their stay.

Singapore (Paused)

Entry Requirements for Hong Kong travellers: Travellers must be fully vaccinated two weeks prior to their Singapore departure date.

Quarantine Requirements: None

Visa Requirements: None 

The highly anticipated travel bubble to Singapore that was set to launch on May 26 has been postponed for the second time due to the rise of untraceable Covid-19 cases in Singapore. Previously set to launch last November before the fourth wave of Covid cases hit the city, vaccinated travellers will be able to travel freely between the two countries without having to quarantine.
