Cover Bhutan Airlines launches direct flights between Hong Kong and Paro

For the first time ever, Bhutan Airlines has announced that it will fly direct between Paro and Hong Kong

Bhutan is one of the most sought-after destinations among travellers from Hong Kong, thanks to its breathtaking landscapes, incredible hiking trails and ancient monasteries.

Now, the Land of the Thunder Dragon will be more accessible than ever to Hongkongers, as Bhutan Airlines will launch direct flights between Bhutan and Hong Kong beginning on January 27. The flights will land and take off in Paro, where Bhutan’s only international airport is located.

Flying into Paro is an adventure in itself. There is the ethereal sight of the Himalayan mountains peeking through clouds … then, skilled pilots pull alarming manoeuvres to guide the plane through a narrow mountain pass, the wings almost grazing cypress-covered cliffs.

Currently, there are only 50 pilots certified to make this manual by-daylight-only landing between towering 18,000 foot peaks.

As Bhutan is famously shy in its approach to tourism, there will be only 16 fixed-departure flights annually between Paro and Hong Kong, timed to align with peak travel seasons.According to Bhutan’s newspaper Kuensel, air fares will cost approximately HK$7,404 for economy class, and HK$9,586 for business class.

Pema N. Nadik, CEO of Bhutan Airlines, expressed his excitement, stating, “We are thrilled to announce Hong Kong as our third destination for the 2025 fixed departure flights. We understand that the holiday season is a popular time for travellers, and we have designed these schedules with that in mind, offering Hongkongers an opportunity to explore Bhutan, one of Asia's unique destinations. We hope that our flights will provide a new and exciting option for those seeking a memorable travel experience."
