Amankora Bhutan allows guests to explore the country's wild and wonderful pockets through a lens of authenticity and luxury. From its contemporary take on traditional Bhutanese architecture, to a wealth of cultural, spiritual and adventure experiences

In 2004, Amankora became the first hospitality brand invited to set up roots in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

"As the first international hotel collection to be granted permission to operate within Bhutan's borders, we wanted to create a journey enabling a seamless unveiling of this remarkable destination," says Jonathan Lithgow, general manager of Amankora Bhutan.

Inspired by the Bhutanese custom of offering a place to rest for travellers traversing the country—you can read more about that here—Amankora has five lodges spread across Bhutan, giving guests the opportunity to experience the diverse and fascinating range of landscapes, cultures and communities that make up the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

Amankora’s lodges can be found in Paro, Thimpu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang. Paro is the largest, with 24 guest rooms, and Gangtey is the most intimate, with just eight.

First Impressions

Guest rooms are more or less identical across all five properties; comprising a king-size bed, large freestanding bathtubs, timber finishing and banquette window seating overlooking majestic forests. There's WiFi, but no televisions. In the evenings, guests can ask the staff to light the bukhari wood-burning stove—found in every room—so you can fall asleep to the soothing sounds of a crackling fire.

Outside the rooms, however, each Amankora property is wonderfully unique, built with the intention to immerse guests into each locale. On this trip, Tatler got to experience Amankora in Thimphu, Punakha and Paro.

Just a short drive from Bhutan’s laidback capital, Amankora Thimphu is a fine example of what is now one of our favourite architectural styles: Brutalist Bhutanese farmhouse. Taking notes from and adding a hint of drama to the local architectural language of sloping roofs and traditional rammed-earth walls, the sheer scale of Amankora Thimphu’s buildings is awe-inspiring.

Amankora Punakha is accessed by a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River, lined with prayer flags. Guests are given a string of prayer flags on arrival, with the option to add it to the bridge. Selfishly, I took mine home as a souvenir.

The property is built around a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse that was built by a former Je Khenpo, or chief abbot of Bhutan, the bottom floor of which is now a dining room with two long tables. Outside of the farmhouse is a stone courtyard, where drinks are served in the evenings. Further down the hill is a heated infinity pool surrounded by views of rice terraces that line Punakha Valley.

Hidden in the hills above Paro town, Amankora Paro is set in a pine forest where a sprawling garden features a sunken firepit surrounded by sun loungers and towering trees, and an unreal view of a temple perched high in the mountains. On request, guests can arrange a one-on-one session with a monk from this temple, which includes guided meditation and Buddhist teachings.

Epic Experiences

Those wanting to walk the historic Trans Bhutan Trail can do so with Amankora, hiking different sections of the trail during the day while the hotel arranges for your luggage to be driven to the next lodge. It’s the perfect, carefree way to enjoy the country’s raw, rugged wilderness through a lens of luxury.

Amankora Paro is the closest to Bhutan's iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery, which can be visited during the day before returning for a healing spa session. We recommend a traditional Bhutanese herbal hot stone bath, which draws on centuries of Ayurvedic tradition.

If long walks aren't your cup of tea, Amankora gives guests opportunities to tap into Bhutan’s soulful character through immersive cultural experiences ranging from unique wildlife encounters, adventures such as white-water rafting and Bhutan's national sport, archery.

If guests are looking to make real connections with our surrounding communities, Amankhora offers a traditional Bhutanese meal  served in local famly's farmhouse.Or help prepare food for the monks, assist with crop sowing and harvesting, and be introduced to sustainable community projects.

"Many of our Aman guests seek spiritual experiences when they visit Bhutan," says Lithgow. "We offer private guided tours of the Kingdom’s numerous temples and monasteries as well as classes on traditional Prayer Flag or Torma Making. There are also opportunities to learn about Buddhism, and the importance of National Happiness within our country."
