Colour is never just seen as colour; in the eyes of the photographer, it sets the mood, evokes emotion and always focuses on transforming images into stories. However, being able to capture colours exactly as they appear as well as how they feel always poses a great challenge for any photographer.

For Indonesian fashion photographer and NPM Photography founder Nicoline Patricia Malina, every shade carries meaning. Known for her cinematic visual language and emotional imagery, Malina approaches photography with the perspective of both an artist and a storyteller. Her latest creative exploration, The Moment of Bloom, sees her partnering with the Huawei Pura 90s Series to discover how mobile photography can capture colour, texture and atmosphere without compromising artistic vision.

Rather than treating the smartphone as just another camera, Malina uses it as a creative companion, one that allows her to bring her artistic vision to life while also trusting the technology to preserve every subtle detail. Across four visual chapters, she demonstrated how the Huawei Pura 90s Series empowers creators to transform a fleeting moment into a compelling work of art.

The journey begins in monochrome—an exploration of the emotional power of one dominant shade. For Malina, red becomes the centrepiece. Focusing on rich and dramatic hues, red is also known to be one of the most difficult colours to reproduce naturally, even under controlled lighting. Inspired by the texture and depth of classical oil paintings, she created an intimate low-light setting focusing on crimson tones.

Here, the Huawei Pura 90s Series’ True-to-Colour Camera 2.0 rose to the challenge. The red remains vibrant without being too oversaturated, while natural skin tones, makeup and delicate facial details remain defined upon closer inspection. Instead of altering the mood of the scene, the camera focuses on the emotion Malina wanted to invoke.

The result is more than technical accuracy; it is a photograph which captures the true character of colour.

Creating depth through contrast

Colour can become even more expressive when opposing tones interact. We see this as Malina experiments with a duotone composition, combining contrasting colours, varied textures and dramatic lighting in order to produce images filled with visual tension and dimension. With such visually striking scenes, there comes a challenge: maintaining detail across brightly illuminated and shadowed areas.

Equipped with Ultra Lighting HDR technology, the Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max balances highlights and shadows with remarkable precision. Fine details in the fabrics, foliage and layered compositions retain definition, while darker areas see textures preserved instead of disappearing into black.

For Malina, this meant much greater creative freedom. She was able to focus on building atmosphere and visual storytelling without worrying about losing detail due to lighting conditions. The technology supports the creative process, allowing every element of composition to work well together.

Few photographic challenges are as demanding as capturing subtle colour transitions. Whether photographing skin, flowers, fabrics or natural light, slight shifts in tone can easily become flattened or distorted.

Malina embraced this complexity by creating layered colour narratives that blended luxurious reds with golden hues, warm peach and green palettes, and beautiful cyan floral arrangements, adding richness and dimension.

Powered by its 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera and Advanced Chroma Sensor, the Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max reproduces these delicate colour gradients with impressive fidelity. Every transition remains smooth and natural while preserving the subtle relationships between tones and maintaining remarkable clarity.

For Malina, the capability extends beyond colour accuracy. It prioritises photography that communicates atmosphere, emotion and artistic intent, qualities that invite viewers to experience colour as an emotional language instead of being labelled only as a visual element.

Some of the most memorable photographs have happened when light was scarce. In the final chapter, Malina pushed the Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max further by testing its capabilities in low-light portraiture and telephoto photography. With minimal lighting, she explored how shadows, texture and colour work together to create mood while preserving clarity.

Instead of limiting creativity, low light becomes another artistic tool, one that the Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max embraces with confidence. Every portrait retains its emotional depth while still preserving the craftsmanship that defines professional photography.

The results reveal crisp facial details with little noise, as well as rich natural colours, even in dim or complex lighting environments. Matched with the camera’s 4x telephoto capability and powerful 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera, Malina can capture expressive portraits from a distance, without the worry of sacrificing texture or colour accuracy.

Throughout The Moment of Bloom, one message becomes clear: the most powerful camera is one that enables creativity rather than distracting from it.
