The film industry veteran is the first Hong Kong actress to receive the honour; director Jojo Hui Yuet-jun and film distributor Frederick Tsui-foon are also on the list

Sandra Ng, renowned Hong Kong actress and producer, makes history as the first Hong Kong actress to join The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)’ 2022 class.

Hong Kong talents director Jojo Hui Yuet-jun and film distributor Frederick Tsui-foon are also on the list, among the 397 individuals who have been invited to join the committee of voting members for this year's Oscars ceremony.

Ng announced the good news with an Instagram post and video on Wednesday, stating, “It feels surreal receiving the invitation from The Academy. I feel honoured to be recognised by such a prestigious film institution and I’m super excited about this new opportunity."

In addition to the appointment, the Hong Kong star is set to appear in a new movie, Chilli Laugh Story, where she starred alongside Mirror’s Edan Lui. The heartwarming family comedy was initially slated to release in February last year but was postponed to a later date due to the pandemic.

AMPAS' membership selection is based on professional qualifications, with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion and equity. The list features names from a wide range of fields across the industry, including actors, producers, directors, costume designers, executives and musicians.

According to the official statement by The Academy, the 2022 class comprises 44 per cent women, with 37 per cent of the class belonging to underrepresented ethnic or racial communities. About 50 per cent of the invitees are from 53 countries and territories outside the United States. Of the 397 new members, 71 are Oscar nominees, including 15 winners.

Some of the notable names on the 2022 list include actors Anya Taylor-Joy and Jamie Dornan, singer Billie Eilish, along with director Sian Heder, who won this year’s Best Picture for her film, Coda.
