We rounded up the best new shows and movies to watch on Netflix this September 2021

Happy September! We’re already halfway through the way and just four months away from 2022. Netflix is releasing a number of new shows this month alongside a few notable movies to put on your watchlist. For starters, those who haven't seen or want to rewatch Japanese animated hit, Your Name can finally do so.

Money Heist, Sex Education and Dear White People are all back for a new season while Midnight Mass, Breaking Bangkok and Squid Game are all-new series to tune in to. If you’re looking for a short watch, tune in to movies, Kate or Prey while Vendetta: Truth, Lies and The Mafia is an exciting documentary to keep an eye out for.

1. Your Name

While not a new movie, this 2016 smash hit is coming to Netflix in September. Your Name follows the stories of two teenagers, each living very different lives—Mitsuha (Mone Kamishiraishi) lives in the rural town of Itomori in Japan. She's bored of the town and dreams of becoming a Tokyo boy in her next life.

Meanwhile, Taki (Ryunosuke Kamiki) lives in Tokyo and aspires to become an architect. The two teens soon share a magical connection, discovering that they are able to swap bodies. Living their lives through the other at certain points, the two decide to meet. But that’s when things become complicated.

Helmed by Makoto Shinkai, this Japanese animated movie was met with praise for its animation, music (composed by the Japanese band, Radwimps) and emotional connection between the two leads, leading to a Best Animation of the Year win at the 40th Japan Academy Prize. A live-action remake set in the US is currently in development.

2. Money Heist: Part 5

The end is coming. The first part of the final season of Spanish cult drama, Money Heist is out this September on Netflix. It will follow the gang, who has been in the Bank of Spain for over 100 hours while the Professor is caught and at risk.

To make matters worse, the new adversary is coming: the army. The gang must once again band together to think of a way to escape and bring the Professor to safety.

Release: September 3

3. Kate

This Netflix movie starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead is about a ruthless criminal, Kate (Winstead) who has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies after finding out that she’s poisoned. But he unexpectedly forms a bond with the daughter of one of her past victims.

Kate is described as the perfect specimen of a “finely tuned assassin” at the height of her game. The movie will showcase a burned assassin’s furious pursuit of one last self-appointed job, set in Tokyo.

4. Prey

An exciting watch this month is Prey where a hiking trip turns into a desperate bid for survival for five friends. At his bachelor weekend party, Roman (David Kross) and his brother, Albert (Hanno Koffler) along with their friends decided to go on a hiking trip into the wild. The group hear gunshots nearby, suspecting they’re from hunters.

But they soon find themselves running to survive when they’ve fallen pretty to a mysterious shooter.

Release: September 10

5. Squid Game

Part Battle Royale, part Alice in Borderland, Squid Game finds 456 desperate contestants competing against each other in a mysterious and deadly survival game involving multiple rounds of traditional Korean childhood games to win 45.6 billion won. But the consequence of losing and refusing to play is death.

The mysterious invitation to the deadly game was sent to people at risk and who are in dire need of money. The 456 participants are from all walks of life. Who will be the winner? But most importantly, what’s the purpose behind the game?

Release: September 17

6. Sex Education Season 3

The students of Moordale Secondary are back. Otis (Asa Butterfield) is now more sexually active, Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Adam (Connor Swindells) are an official couple while Jean has a baby on the way.

Meanwhile, the new headteacher, Hope (Jemina Kirke) wants to return Moordale to a pillar of excellence, Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood) discovers feminism, Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) gets a crush and Otis’s lost voicemail still looms.

Join in another season filled with commitment animals, alien phenomena, vulva cupcakes and a lot more of Madam Groff.

7. Dear White People Volume 4

Returning for its final season, Dear White People sees its characters reunited amid a pandemic. Future Sam (Logan Browning) and Lionel (DeRon Horton) look back on their epic final year together at Winchester which plays out like a ’90s musical.

The fourth season is a can’t-miss, farewell experience that ends on a pitch-perfect promise: the only way to move forward is to throw it back.

8. Bangkok Breaking

With the success of Girl From Nowhere, Netflix is offering a new Thai series, Bangkok Breaking which promises to uncover a dark conspiracy hidden behind the facade of charity in Thailand’s capital.

The six-episode series stars ‘Weir’ Sukollawat Kanaros as Wanchai, who goes to Bangkok to earn money for his family and ‘Aom’ Sushar Manaying as Kat, a fiery young reporter committed to being the voice for the people.

Release: September 23

9. Midnight Mass

From the creator of The Haunting of Hill House, this new series by Mike Flanagan tells the tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are further amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) and a charismatic priest, Father Paul (Hamish Linklater).

Father Paul’s arrival on the island coincides with unexplained and miraculous events, renewing a religious fervour among the community. But do the miracles come at a price?

10. Vendetta: Truth, Lies and The Mafia

If you’re looking for a new documentary to watch in September, be sure to check out Vendetta: Truth, Lies and The Mafia. The documentary series examines the true story behind two of Sicily’s “Anti-Mafia” crusaders, who both wound up on trial for major crimes themselves.
