As Hospital Playlist 2 draws to a close, we look back at some of the most heart-warming scenes we can’t get over. Warning: major spoilers ahead

There is a good reason why Hospital Playlist became the 11th highest-rated Korean drama in cable television history and the K-drama series that has the highest viewership ratings for a pilot episode (season two) among other tvN dramas. While it is a medical drama, the storyline goes way beyond the lives of five doctors in their 40s—Lee Ik-jun (Jo Jung-suk), Ahn Jeong-won (Yoo Yeon-seok), Kim Jun-wan (Jung Kyung-ho), Yang Seok-hyeong (Kim Dae-myung), and Chae Song-hwa (Jeon Mi-do)—who have been long-time best friends since medical school and are now practitioners at Yulje Medical Center.

Sure, there are scenes that depict the realities of working in a hospital; of doctor-patient interaction; and of sleepless nights on duty and the challenges and fulfilment of saving lives. But more than that, the plot focuses on their friendship, families, and the ups and downs of life. Hospital Playlist is not solely a love story, but it makes viewers swoon and intrigued. It’s not suspense nor thriller but many of its scenes make many hearts pause and pound. It’s light but never boring. It’s a musical but relatable and realistic.

Now that it's time to say goodbye to this masterpiece by screenwriter Lee Woo-jung and director Shin Won-ho—the brains behind the famous Reply anthology—let’s go back to the scenes that made us laugh, cry and believe in the magic of friendship, love and life.

1. Ahn Jeong-won and Jang Gyeo-wool are finally official

After their relationship tug-of-war in season one, the handsome pediatric surgeon and general surgery resident finally start dating officially. It can be recalled that Ahn Jeong-won (Yoo Yeon-seok) struggled hard in making the biggest decisions in his life in the first season, including choosing between priesthood or following his heart to be with Jang Gyeo-wool (Shin Hyun-been). Hospital Playlist fans rejoiced when they saw Jeong-won giving Gyeo-wool a tight back-hug—the two obviously madly in love. In the end, love conquers all for the #WinterGarden couple and fans are happy (or, well, jealous).

2. Bad things, at times, do happen to good people

As doctors, they are expected to cure patients and save lives. But what if it's just not possible despite them giving their very best? Just like what happened to the assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology Yang Seok-hyeong (Kim Dae-myung) in the second episode. Resident  Choo Min-ha (Ahn Eun-jin) updated Seok-hyeong about an OB patient who's in distress and while their team did everything they could, the baby did not make it. After the surgery, Seok-hyeong talked to the couple and delivered the devastating news.

After the patient got discharged, Seok-hyung received flowers with a touching note that says the couple would like to thank him "for the precious weeks they got to have with their child" and that if they are to be blessed with another angel in the future, they would like Seok-hyeong to protect him once more.

In life, things happen for a reason and while we should be grateful for things that go the way we want them, we should let go of things we can't control.

Neurosurgeon and the group's only female member, Chae Song-hwa, prepares for her VIP violinist patient's surgery. The night before, she woke up from her nap and went to the hospital cafe but she came too late. Still sleepy, she dragged herself to her car, preparing for a long drive back home. To her surprise, she found two cups of coffee on her car's hood—one with an extra shot of espresso (in case she needs that caffeine boost) and another, decaf (in case she wasn't sleepy). Who sent it? Your guess is right. It's just so good to see friends (and soon lovers) go out of their way to make others happy. How to be you, Song-hwa? #flutter.

4. The Kim Jun-wan and Lee Ik-sun saga

Cardiothoracic surgeon Kim Jun-wan (Jung Kyung-ho) was finally in a secret relationship with Lee Ik-jun's (Jo Jung Suk) younger sister, Lee Ik-sun (Kwak Sun-young). But four episodes into season two and the couple broke up with Ik-sun telling Jun-wan she has fallen for another guy (although we all know it's a lie). Ik-jun eventually found out his sister is sick and he supported her through her treatment.

It was devastating for both, who obviously still love each other but are trying to keep their minds off their true feelings. In episode 9, the two met on a bus for a four-hour trip and Jun-wan asks if she's free for the weekend. Ik-sun agreed to meet him at 6pm, however, on the day they're supposed to meet, Ik-sun was brought to the ER. Her brother Ik-jun calls Jun-wan to let him know what happened and the latter rushed to see her ex-girlfriend. Before they can talk about their so-called "relationship", the cardiothoracic surgeon gets an emergency call.

The couple makes us believe in second chances, or maybe not? We just hope for the best.

An elderly brain-dead woman was brought to Yulje. In her purse, the doctors found a donour card, which expresses her will to give her organs to other patients when she dies. Song-hwa and the team try to get in touch with the woman's family to get their consent but they are surprised to learn that her next of kin is one that works close—a security guard in Yulje.

The guard told the coordinator he needs more time to think about it. Later on, it was revealed that the guard has been abandoned by his mother for 30 years, thus, giving his consent was a very difficult decision for him to make. In the end, he agreed to donate her organs thinking that it's her way to ensure she does one last admirable deed as his mother, despite her shortcomings to him. It just goes to show, time heals.

Jeong-Won’s mother, Jeong Ro-sa (Kim Hae-sook) notices she has been forgetting a lot of things recently and so she thought she might have Alzheimer's. Afraid to consult a doctor and to tell her son about her situation, she keeps this a secret except to her best friend, Joo Jong-soo (Kim Kap-soo) who happens to be the president of the Yulje Foundation.

One night, Ro-sa fell off her bed and got injured resulting in Jong-soo bringing her to the ER. Jeong-won and Song-hwa rushed to check on her and later on found out she has hydrocephalus. Looking at the bright side, Ro-sa was thankful it wasn't Alzheimer's disease or dementia, for she cannot fathom the thought of losing her memory. However, we can't blame Jeong-won for feeling guilty. Towards the end of episode 8, Jeong-won makes her mother's wish come true: to play the piano after a long time. Her playing the piano turns out to be one of the most heartwarming gigs of the Mido and Falasol band.

Despite growing up without a mother by his side, U-ju, Lee Ik-jun's son, turns out to be a child bursting with love. This bright and charming genius is also a foodie (he knows what to order at restaurants and fast food, mind you!), and is Ik-jun's bunch of joy. He talks like an adult most of the time and he is in love with his playmate Mo-ne, whom we wish we could see soon. Ik-jun did a great job after all.

The cicadas started to sing—or at least that's what U-ju believes in—and he is off camping with his father Ik-jun and camping "expert" Song-hwa. Looking almost like a happy family, the three finally went roughing out and enjoyed the campfire. U-ju seems to be in a "lover's quarrel" with his friend Mo-ne while the two adults look like they've been getting closer and closer. Song-hwa is starting to recognise her feelings for Ik-jun, and Ik-jun, as always, looks at Song-hwa as if she is the Queen of his world.

After a long day at Yulje, Song-hwa receives a call from her professor who tells her the bad news: her mother has Parkinson’s disease. Devastated, she called her mother and reassured her that she'll be okay and that there's no need to worry because she is a neurosurgeon. Ik-jun sees her crying and offered to drive her home. The following days were hard for the weeping neurosurgeon but she is fortunate to have a friend like Ik-jun who went out of his way to cheer her up.

While Song-hwa is in her office trying to gather her act together, Ik-jun stands outside her door, blocking everyone who tries to see her and taking care of all their requests and questions. To Song-hwa's surprise, Ik-jun also scoured the online market to buy the stone grill she's been eyeing from a samgyupsal place. #Swoon

It could be recalled that Min-ha has been confessing her feelings for the well-loved doctor but was not lucky enough to get a "yes". Seok-hyeong is a divorcee and thinks he has not healed yet, however, Min-ha's jolly personality is one that is hard to resist. Their ship is finally sailing and the fans are excited to see more.

Tatler Asia

Do Jae-hak, Kim Jung-wan's sidekick and chief resident of cardiothoracic surgery learns that his wife is pregnant. The couple has been trying to have a baby for years but had difficulties conceiving until they both agreed to give up. Along with the news that they are finally expecting comes another news: his wife was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer.

The couple was given two options: terminate the pregnancy and start chemotherapy or wait until the fetus is 14 weeks and start chemotherapy then. Jae-hak, for the love of his wife, immediately chooses the first option, but his wife disagrees. It's one of the most tear-jerking episodes, one that makes us realise that often in life, we can't have it all. Sad but true.

From coffee to rain, Ik-jun and Song-hwa like the same things and are no doubt perfect for each other. While both decided to remain friends even after one confessed his feelings in season one, season two gives us more of their lovey-dovey moments enough to make our hearts flutter. The best friends have been together, come hell or high water; they've seen their best and their worst; and they have not settled for just anyone who's available and waited till they are sure of their love for each other.

In episode 11, Ik-jun got into an accident and Song-hwa realised how her feelings for him have grown. Almost the entire Yulje community knows they are a match made in heaven except them two. In the end, Song-hwa had the courage to tell Ik-jun how she feels about him. And like the rain, cupid arrows started pouring over them. We want more!
