Son Ye-Jin makes a return to our television screens for an upcoming K-drama, Thirty-Nine. Here are all the things you need to know about it

It has been almost a year and a half since Crash Landing On You allowed us to fall in love with one of our favourite K-drama couples, Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin. And just recently, the two have announced their wedding plans, leaving fans a real happy ending for the couple.

If you have been waiting for either of them to make a comeback, the wait is finally over because Son will soon be starring in a new Korean drama called Thirty-Nine which is set to air on Netflix on February 16.

Son will be joined by a star-studded cast with a plot that’s set to make you laugh, cry and inspired. Here, we break down everything we know so far about the upcoming K-drama.

1. An incredible cast

Besides Son Ye-jin, Thirty-Nine cast members include Jeon Mi-do from Hospital Playlist. The show was so well-loved and well-received that it picked up for a second season. It’s hard to imagine that Thirty-Nine is the actress’ only third K-drama to date.

Kim Ji-hyun is also starring in the drama—her first lead role to date. But the actress has appeared in many popular titles such as Hometown Cha Cha Cha, Romance is a Bonus Book and Prison Playbook.

2. A talented supporting cast

Besides the trio leading the main cast, Thirty-Nine also boasts talented a supporting cast.

This includes Yeon Woo-jin from Judge vs. Judge, Lee Moo-saeng from The Silent Sea, Lee Tae-hwan from Touch, Ahn So-hee from Missing: The Other Side, Kang Mal-geum from Squid Game, Seo Hyun-chul from Woman of 9.9 Billion and many more.

3. An inspiring plot

Thirty-Nine will follow three women (Son, Jeon and Kim) who met each other during high school and have since remained friends. Now, they’re on the verge of turning 40 years old.

As they set to welcome a new chapter, the trio linger on the things they still wish to do and achieve—whether it’s in love, career or family matters.

Son will be playing Cha Mi-jo, the director of Gangnam Dermatology Clinic. Meanwhile, Jeon Mi-do will be Jeong Chan-young, an acting teacher. Finally, Kim Ji-hyun is taking on the role of Jang Joo-hee, a cosmetics manager at a department store.

4. An incredible director and screenwriter

Behind every good film or series is an incredible creative team and Thirty-Nine certainly has this covered. 

Yoo Young will be the screenwriter for the show while Kim Sang-ho will be directing. Yoo has been behind many famous Korean films such as Kim Ji-Young: Born 1982 and On Your Wedding Day while Kim Sang-ho has recently directed Run On, which also aired on Netflix.

5. A great female friendship

We’ve heard of bromance...but what’s the female equivalent of that? Regardless, Thirty-Nine is set to showcase the friendship between Son, Jeon and Kim’s characters.

And while there may probably be hints of romance in the drama, it will revolve more around their individual lives, particularly in their friendship over the years.
