Thanks to the blazing heat in Hong Kong and the locals embracing revenge travel with full gusto, one might assume that the social calendar in August will have fewer events—but the reality couldn’t be farther from that.
There is plenty of exciting things happening to keep those who are spending summer in the city fully engaged. From a quirky exhibition combining fast food and fine arts to a tattoo convention, there’s something for everybody, and don’t worry—many of these will be indoors and away from the scorching sun.

1. Gin fest

Where: Unit 402, 4/F, Shun Tak Centre, Sheung Wan
What: Featuring more than 100 different gins and gin-based cocktails, this festival is a must-attend event for any gin enthusiast. Alongside drinks and nibbles, there’ll be seminars and masterclasses led by top mixologists.
2. Meaningful Wellness Journeys

What: Meaningful Wellness Journeys is a new health and wellness initiative that The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong has launched in collaboration with the renowned spa and skincare brand Espa. 3. Hong Kong Cat Expo 2023

Where: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai
What: Here is the purr-fect event for any cat lover in the city! Whether you want check out the latest goodies for your feline friend, support local brands, learn more about cat care from experts or meet some cute kitties, the Hong Kong Cat Expo is a paw-some way to spend your weekend.

What: Emerging art curator Angela Liu and emerging local artists have come together in this exhibition to showcase multimedia works that explore Gen Z’s emotive language, with an underlying commentary on the pathological need to be “online” all the time.

5. S2O Hong Kong Songkran Music Festival
When: August 5-6
Where: Central Harbourfront Event Space, Central
What: Bangkok’s S2O Songkran Music Festival—which is dubbed the world’s wettest party—is making a splash in Hong Kong this month. The concert will see renowned DJs, such as Alesso from Sweden and Nicky Romero from the Netherlands, get the party started alongside local talents such as Chanka and Kiri T. Also expect a special performance by K-pop star B.I.

6. Hong Kong China International Tattoo Convention
When: August 25-27
Where: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai
What: The Hong Kong China International Tattoo Convention is back after a four-year hiatus. Founded by the city’s leading tattoo artist, Gabe Shum—who famously tattooed sports stars like David Beckham and LeBron James—the event will bring together more than 100 tattoo artists from the UK, Poland, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and more.

7. Mirror members’ ‘In My Sight’ solo concert series
When: August 3-5, August 26-27
Where: AsiaWorld–Arena
What: Keung To and Edan Lui will debut their individual solo shows this month, on August 3-5 and August 26-27 respectively. Collectively known as In My Sight, the concert series kicked off last month with Jer Lau and Anson Lo’s solo shows.

What: Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the city’s biggest food expo will showcase famous F&B brands from across the globe, as well as local emerging brands. Those who enjoy a tipple or two might also want to check out a zone dedicated to wines and whiskies curated from around the world.

9. ‘Coach McNugget Art World’ exhibition
When: From now until August 20
Where: Arts Pavilion, West Kowloon Cultural District
What: To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the McDonald’s beloved Chicken McNuggets, the fast food chain presents its first-ever McNuggets-themed exhibition. Curated by Hong Kong entrepreneur Kevin Poon, the exhibition features more than 20 artworks from creatives including Korean American designer Vandy The Pink, British artist Jon Burgerman and others.
10. Hungry Ghost Festival
When: August 30
Where: Across Hong Kong, Macau and other parts of East Asia
What: The Hungry Ghost Festival is a traditional Taoist and Buddhist festival celebrated in certain parts of East Asia. It officially falls on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, but the festivities run all month long. During this time, believers prepare food offerings, burn incense, joss paper and papier-mâché forms of material items such as clothes, gold and other fine goods to pay homage to the spirits of their deceased ancestors.
Salomé Grouard was Digital Editor and Front & Female Content Lead at Tatler Hong Kong. Primarily focused on managing Tatler Hong Kong’s digital platform and content, she also covers gender equality, the music scene and sports through interviews with industry leaders, experts and trendsetters.
Interview highlights include renowned conservationist Dr Jane Goodall, Korean actor Park Seo Jun, singer Jorja Smith, Chinese TV host Yue-Sai Kan, YouTuber Kimono Mom, Japanese rapper Awich, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter Mikey Musumeci.
She has also produced stories on revolutionising sexual wellness in Asia, activism within the surfing community, Asian trans musicians reclaiming their narratives through music and looked at the toxicity of gym culture through the lens of the plus-size community. She also covers music festivals, such as Hong Kong’s Clockenflap and Bali’s Suara.
