Amidst the drama, bling and gossip, the new series also sheds light on the raw and unfiltered side of high society

Netflix’s reality TV spinoff series, Bling Empire: New York, isn’t all about glitz and glamour. While the series does show off the lavish lifestyles of the wealthy Asians of the Big Apple—from Dorothy Wang’s chic condo in Manhattan to casually spending US$10,000 on a shopping spree—the new show also puts forth the cast in a different light.

Similar to its predecessor, the new series has its fair share of parties, drama and gossip. That said, it was the cast’s real and vulnerable moments that seem to capture our attention this time around. From anxiety and insecurity to mourning the death of a loved one, the new series tugs on our heartstrings in a way the OG series didn’t, showing us that these crazy rich Asians might not be so crazy after all.

If you have yet to watch the series, turn away as spoilers are ahead. Below, we dive into some of the most memorable and heartfelt moments of the latest reality show.

Don’t miss: Bling Empire: 10 times Tina Leung brought It-girl style to New York

1. When Tina missed the Chanel haute couture fashion show

One of the most impactful moments was at the start of the series, where Tina Leung scrambles around the city to attend the Chanel haute couture fashion show only to miss it. Leung breaks down in the car, explaining that it took her years to “get an invite, and then to get a front row, and [having] to miss it”.

“I [felt] like I [was] on the edge of a cliff,” she tells co-star Blake Abbie following the incident. In a moment of pure candidness, she shares the pressures of having to stay relevant as a fashion influencer, and how “lonely and tiring” it can get.

2. When the girls planned a trip to the Bahamas

Talk about friendship—when the cast noticed that Leung was constantly working and “looking exhausted”, the ladies decided to plan a trip to the Bahamas to help her relax. “There’s nothing like a girls’ trip to really bond and get to know each other better,” Dorothy Wang shares. From flamingo yoga to heart-to-heart conversations, the trip felt wholesome, regardless of the bumps, to say the least.

3. When Blake grieved for his dad

Earlier in the series, Abbie shares with Leung how lonely he felt sometimes. “It’s as if people forgot that my dad just died last year,” he explains. Towards the end of the series, we see Abbie paying tribute to his late father through joss paper offerings.

“I really wish he was here… for some reason, as I’m burning these papers it’s like my dad was with me.”

4. When Nam decided to stay in New York

Throughout the series, we see Thai socialite Nam Laks bounce back and forth between moving back to Thailand and staying in New York after her graduation. This follows a call between her and her brother, where she was told that she might be cut off after graduation. “I feel really pressured to go back [to Thailand] … I might be cut off if I don’t go back, unless I find a suitable job,” Laks says in the series.

In the later episodes, we see Abbie reassuring her that her friends will be there for her if she decides to stay in New York. “If you do choose to stay, we are here to support you. You’re going to be fine,” he says.

The series finale sees Laks graduate with her degree from Columbia University. She also shares with her brother her decision to stay in New York. She explains that she “just wants to step out and try to find [herself] for a while”.

5. When the cast sat down for a meal together

The series finale saw the cast (minus Stephen and Deborah Hung) catching up over a meal. While tension was seen between Richard Chang, Wang and Leung at the start, it was quickly resolved after an open and honest conversation between the friends.

“No matter how much we fight, we are family,” Leung notes.
