This 19th-century Brooklyn brownstone in Carroll Gardens, transformed by designer Billy Cotton with bold interiors for the celebrity couple, listed this week for USD$7.995 million
Musician Lily Allen and actor David Harbour have listed their 22-foot-wide Brooklyn brownstone for US$7.995 million, more than double the US$3.35 million they paid for the Carroll Gardens property in 2021. Carl Gambino of Compass holds the listing for 381 Union Street, a late-19th-century townhouse spanning four levels and featuring five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and three fireplaces.
The couple enlisted AD100 designer Billy Cotton and architect Ben Bischoff from Made to reimagine the interiors, which appeared in Architectural Digest in February 2023. The main-level living room, which Allen dubbed the “garden room,” is clad in Zuber wallpaper, with green-painted crown mouldings and a modern green fireplace. Glass doors open to a private backyard that houses a Finnish sauna and a cold plunge pool built by Swelter House.

The adjacent kitchen fulfils a long-held wish of Allen’s for Plain English cabinetry, which she told AD she’d wanted since early in their relationship. An Ann Sacks tile backsplash complements an Officine Gullo range, while an original ceiling rose anchors a chandelier above the generous island. A custom-built banquette beneath oversized windows floods the dining area with natural light, upholstered in checkered fabric that balances the room’s refined finishes.

Throughout the Brooklyn brownstone, detailed crown mouldings and wide architraves frame doorways, while original wainscoting follows the stairwell. The full-floor primary suite envelops visitors in Zuber wallpaper and Pierre Frey carpeting. The windowless bedroom features pale pink walls and ceiling, leading to an ensuite with a fireplace, sitting area, and marble vanities inspired by Versailles, with swan-shaped tapware. Dual walk-in closets provide storage, and the carpeted floor, which extends around the built-in bathtub, reflects traditional English bathroom design.

The third level offers two guest rooms, a skylit lounge with built-ins, and a separate home office. On the garden level, an additional guest suite and casual living room with built-ins and a fireplace provide direct yard access. Elsewhere in the Brooklyn brownstone, a media room features wall-to-wall tiger-print carpet that Allen extended onto the sofa and ottoman. The fully finished basement includes a gym, multiple storage areas, and laundry facilities.

The Brooklyn brownstone sits on one of Carroll Gardens’ most coveted blocks, near Carroll Park and the F and G trains at Carroll Street. The neighbourhood, positioned between Park Slope and Red Hook, offers boutiques and restaurants along Court and Smith Streets. The Brooklyn brownstone market has appreciated considerably since 2021, reflecting strong demand for historic properties with designer finishes. Allen released her album “West End Girl” last week, and the couple separated in February after four years of marriage.
