The muted palette shifts to soft whites in the living room

Designed by Purple Backyard, this Vile Parle home blends refined materials, with graceful architectural restraint inspired by the Princess of Monaco’s quiet conviction

Located in the bustling residential precinct of Vile Parle in Mumbai, local interior design firm Purple Backyard was tasked with designing a home for a multigenerational family who sought a space that felt both emotionally rooted and quietly poetic amidst the urban hubbub of the city.

Drawing inspiration from Grace Kelly’s understated elegance, founder and principal architect Kumpal Vaid looked beyond the icon’s ‘50s glamour to her quiet conviction, shaping a tranquil environment that honours the homeowners’ past while embracing a refined, contemporary calm through softness, precision, and meaningful restraint.

A cohesive material language unfolds throughout the 4,000-sq-ft residence. In celebration of light, texture, and emotion rather than spectacle, tone-on-tone marble and pyrite-speckled stone intermingle with lime-washed and stucco-textured walls, while light oak wood grounds accents of sterling and German silver that appear across silk-washed murals.

These orchestrations of subdued lustre give every room its own character, with each element reappearing in different intensities across the home, thereby tying the entire residence into one cohesive rhythm.

The spacious marble foyer greets in elegant hues of brown and beige, where sculptural pieces decorate the space, offering a precursor to the tactile richness that lies beyond the entrance door.

In the living room, Purple Backyard has carved out a spiritual corner that houses a meditative “garden,” featuring an arched niche with a Buddha statue, its presence amplified by the play of light on hand-finished surfaces.

Anchoring the space are artifacts made from stone, metal, and German silver, creating a gentle dialogue of weight and delicacy that exudes calm.

Stepping into the living room in earnest, the muted palette shifts to soft whites, highlighted by pearl-toned marble underfoot and off-white stucco pilasters.

Here, two seating clusters encourage flexible gatherings: one gravitates around a chequered marble block table paired with PB Home’s stacked-glass and stone ensign lamp; whereas another is a quieter area defined by a glass-top pedestal table–both offering layers of texture and sculptural interest that set the tone for the emotional sensibility flowing through the home.

While sharing an open-plan footprint with the living room, the dining area feels distinctly separated beneath a medium-oak coffered ceiling, which lends the space a warm, grounded composition.

The luminous beige marble flooring continues the jewel-like finish referenced subtly throughout the house, while the walls–a blend of lime-washed and silk-washed surfaces–catch and scatter daylight, adding a gentle fresco-like softness.

Illuminated by a chrome chandelier overhead, a sculptural dining table with a marble-slatted top rests upon marble pedestals, flanked by restored dining chairs that belong to the family.

In a conscious act of preserving sentiment, Vaid infused subtle redesigns into the original pieces instead of replacing them altogether, aligning the refreshed interiors with the family’s cherished furnishings so they could retain the emotional resonance of shared meals and history as they move forward.

Furthermore, a concealable bar cabinet sits along one wall, its pyrite surface speckled with metallic depth, juxtaposed against the white wall panelling on the opposite side–a visual link that connects back to the adjacent living area, keeping the design language seamless despite the shift in materials.

The home’s theme of graceful understatement extends into the private quarters, consisting of the master suite and a bedroom each for the parents and the children.

In the main bedroom, a curved coving detail creates the illusion of height while providing a soft architectural ease to the space, as stucco-finished walls interplay with alabaster marble cladding to break the monotony with a subtle glow.

Additionally, two oversized oriental-print lamps introduce an effortless sense of scale without disrupting the visual calm of the room.

Through a collapsible arched passage with pearl veneer, the main suite leads into the private study–fondly nicknamed the Jewel Room for the metallic objects gleaming on a dedicated display wall with custom shelving in German silver.

Beneath a minimalist coffered ceiling, an asymmetrical veneered table carries intention in this disciplined space.

Meanwhile, the master ensuite–defined by beige and white marble–is laid out with clearly demarcated bathing and vanity zones, where brass fixtures warm the palette and lend a gentle, luxurious radiance to the space.

Honouring the family’s preference for both tradition and modernity, the parents’ bedroom features a wardrobe with classical foliage prints upon the shutters, while a neoclassical marble-panelled wall anchors the space, offset by twin accent chairs in bold black-and-white print and a chrome table.

In contrast, the children’s bedroom introduces a refreshing degree of playful sophistication with soft pastel blue–appearing as a gradient across the wardrobe and as a patterned wallpaper that lines the corridor.
