Taking inspiration from the family’s art collection, Prestige Global Designs conjures up a Sentosa apartment that pairs Asian heritage and modern design influences

A home ought to tell a story and be a characterful space that represents your lifestyle and the magnetic sparkle of your personality. For this particular abode in Singapore’s Sentosa Cove, Prestige Global Designs sought to capture these elements and more by taking a cue from the family’s remarkable collection of Asian art.

With its stunning waterfront location and 1,711 sq ft footprint, the three-bedroom apartment already boasted desirable qualities of its own. The family of four were well-familiar with the process of renovation work and knew they wanted a home that was “unique and different” from any other residence they had lived in.

With their two children now grown-up and currently living overseas, the parents wanted to create a cosy sanctuary they could enjoy, and that their son and daughter would love returning to.

The couple prioritised quality and durability for their home furnishings and also wanted their favourite luxury design brands to feature in their abode. They liked the idea of having a bold mix of lively hues and patterns and left it to the designers to recommend a design scheme and material palette.

One of the three bedrooms was to be transformed into the wife’s study. The homeowners also asked for ample storage space and wonderful ways to display their paintings and objets d’art. What the Singapore-based design firm needed to do was help curate the selection as part of the apartment’s cohesive design.

With the renovation led by directors Michael Ong and Jeremy Tay, Prestige Global Designs aimed to create a memorable interior that represents the couple’s impeccable taste, and also the beautiful ways they celebrate their Asian heritage through their art collection.

“We created an Asian-inspired atmosphere [led] by the client’s extensive art collection, and employed ingenious space planning, furniture and lighting selections, and customised material finishes to ensure the uniqueness of each piece,” shares Tay. “We enhanced the Asian-inspired theme by utilising bold colours, strong motifs and textured materials throughout the apartment.”

Asian art was the starting point for this project, and its enthralling effect is evident throughout the apartment. The entry hall is transformed into a gallery-like space: sliding doors at the entrance are adorned with gold-trimmed details and geometric forms inspired by Asian-style décor. These doors lead to the living room and are matched with artworks and a pair of Tibetan bells that set the tone for the many Eastern influences found in the rest of the home.

A Mingx chair by Konstantin Grcic for Driade features a bronze-hued finish, and offers a modern take on the Chinese chair archetype; its metallic tone also picks up the textures of the artistic additions in the space, which include a totem with geometric motifs that catch the eye.

“The entrance area reflects the client’s personality; this meticulously curated lobby is a testament to the client’s discerning taste and attention to detail,” says Tay.

The airy living room continues the abode’s artistic flair. Its neutral scheme provides a tranquil canvas, animated with a sprightly mix of tangerine orange, red and turquoise-blue hues found on the art and accent pieces in this space. Backlit display shelves house the couple’s treasured zodiac animal sculptures as well as decorative vases and plates. Next to these shelves and the TV, a lively school of koi fish forms an eye-catching art installation on the gold-trimmed wall feature.

The designer furnishings reflect the organic forms of the living room’s artistic elements; these include the curvy forms of the B&B Italia sofa, Carl Hansen armchairs, and coffee tables from Roche Bobois. Behind the sofa, a set of three Chinese operatic figurines is placed on a console to bring another lively dimension to the space.

A Moooi rug adds texture to the space with its interplay of linear details and rounded forms. Here, the firm deliberately avoided featuring decorative pendant lights so as not to detract from the layered look and the lofty feel of the space.

Next to the living area is a balcony with views of the marina, dotted with sights of beautiful yachts. Hardwearing vinyl flooring in two contrasting colours creates visual interest in the outdoor area, and a leafy Dracaena fragrans plant lends a verdant touch. The outdoor furnishings and accent cushions pick up the rich red hue used in the earlier zones while adding a dash of colour to invigorate the space.

In the open-plan dining area, the clients wanted a particular artwork as its focal point: a handwoven rug that depicts a scene in Chinese mythology, in which the Eight Immortals are embarking on an oceanic odyssey. Set in a gold frame, it represents the couple’s heritage and interest in Asian culture, while referencing the abode’s proximity to the sea.

The kitchen continues the light, neutral scheme of the living and dining areas and features ample storage to keep the space uncluttered and culinary tools and tableware neatly organised. The light wood-clad ceiling adds a pleasing contrast to the finishes of the kitchen cabinetry.

The bedrooms take on a more intimate ambience with darker hues and plush textiles. The master bedroom is a restful space furnished with art pieces and a bed in a complementary design from Saporiti Italia. A frosted glass wall separates the sleeping and bath areas and also brings more daylight into the bathroom.

As the primary guest room was to be shared by the son and daughter, the designers created a space in tones and textures that would appeal to both, featuring soft blue and lavender accent hues as well as soothing, earthy shades on the feature walls and cabinetry.

The study is crafted as a conducive workspace that can double as a guest room should both children return home at the same time. This room showcases decorative elements from Japan, including a pair of traditional kokin-bina dolls representing the emperor and empress, as well as a lacquered desk, and cabinetry sporting a chequerboard pattern.

The entire project took three months to complete, and the outcome was met with great delight and pride by the homeowners as well as the design team. “It was really a joy working with the supportive clients; we truly love the outcome because the interior is packed with personality,” says Tay.
