Renowned event stylist Gideon Hermosa shares the tips and tricks on how to make your Christmas tree sparkle
What’s the first thing to consider before styling a Christmas tree?
The personality of the household. This comprises the household members—whether there is a toddler or older kids or an all-adult household. The tree should be aligned with their likes, interests and something they appreciate. Coordination with the home interior is also important. Think about the look and feel that you are aiming for concerning the home interior.

Any tips for those who are too busy to decorate their tree?
Start by defining the preferred theme or colour. It will save them time once they determine their desired look. Next, focus on one to two major elements to avoid being overwhelmed. If you’re eyeing a winter Christmas, focus on snowflakes and white Christmas balls. Then, play with lights. It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and can bring a big difference to the tree. Also, ask for help or source a stylist. There are many professionals and home stores that offer Christmas tree styling services.

What’s a mistake you often see people make when decorating their tree?
One common mistake is the type and colour of Christmas lights used. People don’t realise the importance of using the right light colour, wire colour and effects. All should match and blend. Another mistake is the colour pairing of Christmas lights, Christmas trees and decors. A suggestion is to follow a monochromatic effect to avoid these errors.

What theme works best for a minimalist home?
A classic Christmas in red, green and gold with berries and pinecone elements. Another is Winter Wonderland with crystals and glass balls for a modern vibe. What’s the difference between a festive tree and a cluttered one? A festive tree displays cohesiveness from the tree colour, decors used and the lights. It is where every element plays a vital role and tells a story. A tree that is playful in an orderly way and colourful which eventually gives you joy just by looking at it. A cluttered tree is an (overdone) tree. It showcases many unmatched elements.

How would you style a Christmas tree using local ornaments? Which types of accents would you use?
We can do a mother-of-pearl inspired tree using capiz as the main accent. It is a local ornament that is very chic and elegant. Followed by ornaments in white, gold and pearl highlighted by plenty of Christmas lights.
What’s your all-time favourite holiday theme?
I always dream of snow every Christmas season, so I would say Winter Wonderland.
