On July 1, Tatler Homes Singapore held the ninth edition of the Tatler Homes Design Awards with a glamorous gala. Alongside recognising 14 outstanding winning projects, the evening also crowned three Spatial Design Studios On The Rise.

Introduced as a new category this year, the Spatial Design Studios On The Rise award honours emerging spatial design studios, including architects, interior designers and other built environment practitioners that have been established for less than 10 years. The latest addition to the annual awards is presented in partnership with Surface Project, reflecting a commitment to spotlighting innovative and up-and-coming design talent.

The three winners were each presented with a specially crafted trophy made from offset natural stones from Hafary, symbolising sustainability and the creative reuse of materials. This unique award not only celebrates their achievements but also embodies the value of thoughtful design and environmental consciousness.

The Residences at W

Set against the lush backdrop of Sentosa, The Residences at W offers a unique canvas for luxurious living, where modern design meets the tranquillity of island life. Within this prestigious development, interior design firm Chalked worked on two exceptional projects: a three-bedroom ground-floor unit and a four-bedroom penthouse unit.

At The Residences at W, Chalked has delivered unique spaces for the development’s Flamingo lounge, as well as several of its apartment units. Highlighting the studio’s versatility are a ground floor and penthouse unit that showcase its expertise in maximising living spaces. Both projects at The Residences at W were completed within a 12-week timeframe, showcasing the firm’s efficiency and dedication to high-quality results.

The team’s hands-on approach to project management ensures that every aspect of the design process is meticulously overseen, from innovative concept design to final completion. The firm’s versatility shines through in these two distinct projects, demonstrating its eight-member team’s ability to adapt their design philosophy to suit different living environments while maintaining a focus on timeless elegance and functionality.

The 2,551 sq ft ground-floor apartment is designed as a family-friendly haven that balances style with functionality. One of the project’s primary challenges was transforming the existing planters around the pool into a more usable area, inserting a stylish daybed that encourages relaxation and outdoor enjoyment. This clever adaptation enhances the outdoor living experience while adding a playful element to the home.

Chalked’s commitment to effective spatial planning is evident throughout the home. The layout maximises natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere that enhances the overall living experience. The timeless aesthetic approach is reflected in the choice of furnishings and décor, which harmoniously blend with the outdoor environment, creating a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

The 3,348 sq ft, four-bedroom penthouse unit elevates luxury living to new heights. With its expansive layout and breathtaking views, the penthouse serves as a stunning canvas for Chalked’s design vision. One of the standout features of this project is the innovative use of space within the dining area, where an elegant display feature was created to solve practical storage needs.

The design team paid special attention to the corridor, transforming it into a cosy reading lounge that invites relaxation and leisure. This thoughtful design choice utilises the space effectively while also enhancing the overall look of the penthouse. The lighting design throughout the unit was meticulously planned to create various atmospheres, from intimate dinners to lively gatherings.

Another key element of the penthouse design is the careful curation of materials and furnishings. This attention to detail ensures that every element, from the wall panelling to the cushions, contributes to a cohesive and inviting environment.

Yarrow Gardens

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Singapore’s Siglap neighbourhood, this visually stunning residence, which is simultaneously modern yet rustic, occupies a 3,500 sq ft plot and boasts a generous built-up area of 7,900 sq ft. Developed by Brand New Land, the project embodies the developer’s commitment to crafting thoughtful, family-oriented homes that harmonise with nature and respond to the evolving needs of contemporary family life in a post-pandemic world.

Tasked with realising this vision was Create Architecture, whose design seamlessly integrates abundant natural light with lush greenery, creating a serene environment ideal for rest, entertainment and connection. The team skilfully navigated the challenge of flooding the home with natural light while ensuring privacy.

These architectural elements channel a sense of grandeur, while custom woodwork and soft lighting create a cohesive, inviting interior. Each room offers delightful views of either the garden or the courtyard, blending indoor and outdoor spaces to create an intimate yet expansive abode ideal for relaxation and lively gatherings.

1 Stratton Place

This project, undertaken by Create Architecture, led by Tan Bing Hui, is a case study of how thoughtful design can transform existing structures into contemporary homes. By capitalising on the lush greenery to the east and south of the site, the design team has created living spaces that seamlessly integrate with their environment.

The unique attributes of the corner plot—its asymmetrical shape and surrounding greenery—presented both challenges and opportunities. Rather than imposing a rigid design, Create Architecture embraced the natural quirks of the site, resulting in a home that feels organic and connected to its surroundings. At the heart of the design is a concept inspired by hanging gardens, which blurs the boundaries between the built environment and nature.

This approach transforms the asymmetrical plot into a sanctuary. Previously awkward spaces were reimagined as green zones, creating areas that bridge the architecture and the neighbourhood. By weaving greenery into the structure itself, the design mediates between the indoors and outdoors, softening the house’s presence on the street.

The home’s original form was preserved but elevated through the addition of new walls, windows and roofs, enhancing its connection to the environment. These updates balance functionality with aesthetics, allowing the home to stand out without disrupting the natural harmony of the area.

Founded by Priscilla Khiu and Lorcan Duffy in 2017, Haus Atelier has distinguished itself by combining creative visions with meticulous project management, ensuring each detail is thoughtfully executed. The studio’s philosophy centres on creating homes that embody personality and timelessness, transcending fleeting trends to reflect the unique stories and lifestyles of their owners.

“Good design cannot be compartmentalised, and many of the old buildings that we marvel at today are essentially created from that union of knowledge and the power of creativity,” shares Khiu in an interview with Tatler Homes Singapore.

The studio also embraces innovation while maintaining a grounded practicality, making it a trusted partner for those seeking both aesthetic sophistication and functional excellence.

A Mediterranean-inspired Singapore home

Khiu, the firm’s creative director, takes an approach grounded in curiosity and has a penchant for soulful touches, along with an insatiable need to test ideas. An example is her Mediterranean-inspired Singapore home, in which materials such as rough-hewn stone, weathered wood, terracotta tiles and wrought iron accents evoke an old-world rustic charm.

After purchasing the semi-detached house, which stands at the end of a cul de sac in a residential neighbourhood, the couple transformed its run-of-the-mill spaces into calm settings for family living. A new gate separates the long driveway from the area in front of the main door so that it becomes a pleasant outdoor space for the couple’s two young daughters to safely play in.

Light also enters through another door in the dining area, which is demarcated from the living area by a level change. Khiu wanted something other than a circular or square table in the square-shaped space, so she designed her own.

On the second storey, the master bedroom, combined from two smaller bedrooms, offers picturesque views of the foliage, enhanced with a green rug from Aratamete. An overall white palette, sheer drapes, white bedsheets, shutters and trims in the joinery complete the resort ambience.
