Award-winning local artist Pamela Tan of Poh Sin Studio’s latest art installation in collaboration with Disney Malaysia, titled Embrace the Unknown, invites visitors to explore the complex interplay of emotions within the human psyche, as showcased in Pixar’s latest animation film Inside Out 2.
A mesmerising blend of steel, cotton string, and stress balls, Tan’s work showcasing at The Exchange TRX draws heavily from her personal journey towards emotional acceptance, challenging societal norms that equate emotional restraint with virtue.

“This artwork mirrors life’s complexities, where emotions intertwine like the physical interplay of structure and string in the installation,” explains Tan. “It reflects my childhood lessons about emotional suppression, a societal dictate that ‘good girls’ should not be emotional.”
“Overcoming this, I’ve embraced all emotions as vital, akin to the natural processes that sustain life itself,” she continues. “This piece reflects the beauty of our emotional spectrum, encouraging viewers to recognise and harmonise their inner experiences.”

Tan brings a touch of whimsy to the serious subject matter, where robust, yellow metal structures that represent Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler, embody strength and stability.
Meanwhile, the erratic orange strings capture Maya Hawke’s Anxiety’s pervasive, often disruptive presence portrayed in the film.
Accessible to visitors of all ages, the thought-provoking installation is also an invitation to revisit the wonders and emotions of one’s inner child, to which Tan elaborates: “I included stress balls in the design for their playful, tactile qualities–round, squeezable, bouncy, and fun–perfectly aligning with the theme.”
