Named in homage to the alpine deity Perchta from Germanic mythology, also known as the “bright one,” this three-storey chalet is a standout in a private enclave of 46 identical homes. It belongs to a business couple, avid nature enthusiasts who see this retreat as their haven for ski weekends and extended getaways with loved ones.

The expansive 7,500 sq ft space comprises five luxurious bedroom suites and baths, accommodating up to 18 guests. Consequently, Chalet Bertha is not only a private escape but also serves as an idyllic setting for short-term lettings, hosting everything from corporate retreats to intimate conferences and leisurely holidays.
Inside the architectural shell by architect Luc Tremblay, multidisciplinary studio Perron Design fashioned the interiors of this magnificent chalet to marry the cosiness of a home with the opulence of a five-star hotel, with a special focus on spaces for well-being in which family, friends and guests would feel as comfortably as they do at home.

Taking a cue from 18th-century Parisian grand townhouses and private mansions known as hôtel particuliers or “personal hotels,” Perron Design blurs the line between residential and commercial to make the family chalet a place of relaxation and vacations worthy of the biggest hotel chains.
“The client wanted a real turnkey solution, which is rather rare,” says Sarah Ève Hébert, associate designer at Perron. “They left the field open to us and we decided to play the ‘hotel’ card down to the smallest details, including placing the crockery in the cupboards, a luggage trolley in the hallway, and labelled toiletries in the bathrooms.”

“Bertha is a chalet-hotel characterised by its holiday spirit, flavoured by Nordic inspirations—very neutral and minimalist,” adds Hébert, whose design studio has been in the industry for nearly 30 years. “We then punctuated the ensemble with textured, colourful and unusual elements for Quebec.”
Beneath the exposed, whitewashed fir wood frame, the overall interior design is characterised by a minimalist, warm, and highly functional slant.

Other wood varieties such as pine, oak and spruce, indoor plants and felted wool were favoured, as were soft colours and clean lines.
All of these are bathed in the natural light that enters through Chalet Bertha’s generous fenestration, fostering a constant link with the natural environment and allowing those indoors to keep track of the passage of the day.

Paired with the minimalism are custom-made furnishings directly imported from Europe, and hand-woven cushions and rugs by local artisans from L’Isle-aux-Coudres.
“The interior design honours both European prestige and Quebec charm, infused with a sense of Nordicity, pleasure and eclecticism,” explains Hébert.

This area leads to a colourful children’s dormitory, which is equipped with custom pieces, including a climbing wall and a convertible games table, and crowned by a red slide that also serves as a staircase to the upper floors.
The heart of the chalet is the great room, an impressive 2,500 sq ft space with a soaring beamed ceiling. Segmented areas blend seamlessly: a spot for meals with a striking yellow piano, a cosy lounge for reading and relaxation, and an intimate dining area adjacent to an open kitchen equipped with professional-grade amenities.
