Held at the Galerie 5 showroom until September 30, Designers & Crafters Edition 01 is an exhibition at Galerie 5 curated by Sol Luminaire and Industry+ that highlights the work of six design studios from Singapore

Celebrating the creativity and incredible talent of Singapore design, Sol Luminaire introduces the Designers & Crafters Edition 01 exhibition together with Industry+ that spotlights the works of six homegrown studios. Held at the Galerie 5 showroom at Craig Road, the month-long exhibition is curated by the local lighting purveyor in collaboration with Industry+ showcases a culmination of product designs that beautifully interweaves art and function.

The opening night saw guests exploring the fine craftsmanship while chatting with some of the homegrown artisans who participated in this exhibition. The evening soirée also gave guests the chance to marvel at the new contemporary lighting and decor collections carried by Sol Luminaire, which includes the likes of Ukrainian design label Makhno Studio and the Brooklyn-based Forma Rosa Studio. The occasion was a success, with designers and art lovers interacting with the displayed works and socialising over glasses of wine, cheese and canapes from Cheeselads.

A veteran ceramicist in Singapore, Jason Lim is no stranger to creating artistic vessels in this medium and has even showcased his works at the Venice Biennale. Taking a plunge into creating functional home objects, Lim created multiple ceramic trays and plates that marries the beauty in imperfection. Giving each piece a sense of character, each of these objects takes on a unique design with different crystal formations and shapes, in a myriad of colours. In addition to this, the contemporary artist takes a page from nature with his artful ceramic stools that mirrors that of a small tree stump with its play on texture and form.

Singaporean product designer Karyn Lim is certainly one to watch. Lim, who recently worked on the August 2023 cover of Tatler Homes Singapore, has not only shown us her prowess in AI-enabled art; she is best known for her understated projects with her eponymous design practice, Studio Karyn Lim. Making a debut in Singapore are the So Plast!c Tables which were a hit at SaloneSatellite during Milan Design Week 2023. Made using plastic waste from food and drink packaging that would have been discarded into landfills, the So Plast!c tables demonstrate the innovative possibilities of sustainable design. What makes these tables interesting is their asymmetrical structure and how each table imparts a one-of-a-kind look due to the production process that turns salvaged materials into eco-polymer sheets.

R/R Labs is founded by power-duo Royce Tan and Royston Ho. Firm believers of a primal-like, minimalist aesthetic that takes priority over comfort, R/R Labs takes inspiration from the design and fashion worlds to create simple yet meaningful furniture that can last the test of time. At the Industry+, Designers & Crafters Edition 01 exhibition, the design maestros showcase their lineup of head-turning furniture made from restored wood off-cuts and embraces their love for the colour black.

Drawing upon architectural sensibilities, Mike Lim cements his legacy with a new project of conceptually-designed stools and tables at the Designers & Crafters Edition 01 exhibition. Having decades of experience in his arsenal, the director of DP Design harnesses ceramic off-cuts through an upcycling process to construct this artistic furniture capsule. Fun fact: each multi-purpose design object weighs approximately 80kg.

Raised in Singapore and currently based in the Toyama prefecture of Japan, Masutani May celebrates the material of glass in each of her creations. Upon graduating from the Toyama Institute of Glass Art in 2020, May continues to experiment with the fragile nature of the material in each three-dimensional sculpture she creates through fine craftsmanship techniques. Currently, she runs her own eponymous studio practice that features more of her glass artworks and products and is as an assistant to various glass artists in the industry.

With works presented at the Art Basel in Hong Kong and the first Singaporean to be shortlisted for the Loewe Craft Prize in 2018, Ashley Yeo is a name recognised in the art and fashion industry for her delicate, geometrical paper-cuts. At the Designers & Crafters Edition 01 exhibition, she celebrates the ephemeral quality of the medium through this showcase of her latest masterpieces. This includes a detailed, three-dimensional paper-cut sculpture and two framed paper-cut artworks that took months in-the-making.

Spearheaded by Denmark designer Christian Hammer Juhl together with Singapore designer Jade Chan, the eponymous design studio creates artistic home goods that hones in on excellent craftsmanship and material use. Known for their versatility with delicate and natural mediums, Christian+Jade has also been featured at design events the 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen this year.

For the Industry+, Designers & Crafters Edition 01 exhibition, the pair showcases how a single sheet of aluminium can be reimagined with hammering techniques into decorative and functional home objects. Visitors can look forward to seeing the limited edition candleholders from the Reflecting Flame collection—only twenty models are available—and the show-stopping, distorted wall mirror.

The Designers & Crafters Edition 01 exhibition is held at Galerie 5 by Sol Luminaire, 50 Craig Road, Singapore 089688.
