Homegrown interior design firms Akihaus and Mosh Interior reveal how a complementary blend of King Living furnishings elevates the look of their projects

Creating a timeless interior takes considerable skill, attention to detail, and the right set of quality furnishings to suit the owners’ needs For Singaporean interior designer Lawrence Puah, Australian brand King Living is certainly one of the notable offerings that he shortlists for his clients.

“There are many great features about King Living’s furniture, but two things stand out for me. First, the wide variety of designs that cater to different styles of interior, making them a great match with the different designs that we’ve created; and secondly, the fantastic recliner sofa designs,” says Puah, who is the director and founder of homegrown firm Akihaus.

These qualities complement his creative philosophy, which focuses on a “life-centred approach” that balances clever spatial planning with the aesthetics of every project. “We strive to fuse new proposed forms and details with the existing spaces so much so that the new design appears to always have been part of the original architecture,” says Puah.

The designer highlights the Reo II Recliner Sofa, which he considers one of his favourite designs from King Living as it pairs a beautiful form with the comfort that a reclining sofa can offer. “When retracted, you can never tell that it is a recliner at all; the lightness of the elevated platform skilfully balances the plush cushioning to ensure that the sofa never looks bulky, unlike so many other recliner sofas,” he says.

Puah picked the Reo II Recliner Sofa for The Light House, a walk-up apartment distinguished by its solarium-inspired design. “The Reo II Recliner Sofa allows for our clients to have the comfort of reclining when sitting on it, yet it can be retracted to allow for maximum space for movement whenever they have guests around; the 25-year warranty on the frame also makes it a winner in my book,” adds Puah.

To fit this home’s garden-themed concept, Puah selected furnishings in understated tones to create a calming ambience. Among these are the Quay Outdoor Woven Dining Chairs and Armchairs to match the neutral scheme, creating the perfect venue for the sociable owners to entertain their guests.

For the Sloane Residences, the Akihaus team selected a beautiful array of furnishings from King Living, complementing their Italian client’s taste with the brand’s signature laid-back luxury that is the epitome of Australian design.

“The details in this home are very much pared down, creating a modern interpretation of the classical interior. The furniture that we’ve selected from King Living has that modern DNA that matches our design very well, adding an air of sophistication to the overall composition,” says Puah.

This apartment has a 4.6m-high ceiling in the open-plan living and dining room, which Puah drew attention to through the use of linear details on the interior architecture as well as the collections from King Living. There is a marvellous play of forms evident, too: for instance, the plush proportions of soft furnishings against the linear form of the tables and consoles.

“This design approach not only leads to intuitive and fluid design solutions that support the current and future needs of our clients, but also creates significantly elevated and holistic outcomes that skilfully balance functionality with the spirit of the place,” says Puah.

Tin Orense, principal designer at Mosh Interior professes an admiration for the versatility of the collections from King Living. Orense is currently working on the renovation of a landed house that uses various designs from King Living. Together with Mosh Interior founder Shermaine Ong, the team chose some of its top collections such as the modular Kato Sofa, which they admire for its versatile design.

“We like how the modular Kato Sofa is easy to reconfigure, as well as the possible additions of side tables and storage options,” says Orense. “The balance and proportion on the furniture and decor items are carefully selected and placed to create a harmonious composition.”

The furnishings from King Living have been selected in matching colours and materials to complement the minimalist interior design, which incorporates an ample use of wood, marble and glass that are elevated with metallic details.

“We use high-quality materials to achieve an elegant and luxurious feel in this home; these materials bring a sense of sophistication and richness to the space. The use of wood for the King Living Luna Timber Barstools, Edge Cosmo Sideboard and Crescent Tables complements and matches well with one another; we like the contrast of dark wood and the curvy shape of the Crescent Tables. We did the sam with the rounded shape of the bar stools, versus the linear form of the kitchen cabinets and worktop,” he adds.

The Zaza Sofa is also among his top recommendations from King Living; Orense cites its “timeless” appeal for why it was selected for L Residence, an apartment that continues to be a highly referenced project by its new clients. “We have chosen the King Living Zaza Sofa not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its comfort and durability,” says Orense. “The neutral palette of the sofa creates a contrast against the home’s black walls, allowing it to stand out.”

Ultimately, the goal is to create spaces that feel both “intimate and inviting”; a feat that has been easily achieved given the fine selection from the Australian furniture purveyor. “We can easily select and match King Living furniture with our interior style. The forms, textures and colours are what we are looking for,” he says.
