Cover Actress and entrepreneur Joanne Peh

Any home renovation project can be overwhelming, which is why actress and entrepreneur Joanne Peh turned to ClimaShield to make her open-plan living and dining room even more versatile

What makes a house a home? For actress, entrepreneur and podcaster Joanne Peh, home is “a cosy sanctuary where [my husband and I] can work, entertain, relax and raise a happy family”.

But building a dream home is no small feat, as Peh and her actor husband, Qi Yuwu, can attest. When the couple started the renovation process for their new abode, they were faced with several challenges.

One of their concerns includes transforming a couple of under-utilised areas in the home into cosy communal spaces. To do so, they turned to local firm ClimaShield Solutions, which offered a couple of innovative window treatment solutions tailored to their spaces.

The firm introduced the couple to Glass Curtains, a frameless glass system from Europe. Made from 10mm-thick tempered glass panels that have been tested for impact performance, surface compression and fragmentation, the system is installed within the former indoor balcony area, transforming the semi-outdoor space into an enclosed breakfast nook.

As the Glass Curtains require precise installation and the home boasts several unique architectural features including curved interior elements, ClimaShield took special care when fitting the bespoke system.

Instead of being hung from the ceiling, the Glass Curtains sit on a bottom track, which reinforces the glass panels against strong winds and heavy rain—elements that can affect the high-rise apartment, given its lofty height. Without the use of ball bearings, which will wear out over time, the panels are able to glide seamlessly and quietly. They can also be secured in place with a lock.

The frameless design offers Peh and her family uninterrupted views of the city skyline and streetscape, allowing natural daylight to stream into the home. A separate set of Glass Curtains is also installed at the entrance of the nook, serving as a multifunctional partition between the space and Peh’s open-plan living and dining room.

After a consultation session with ClimaShield, Peh decided to install the outdoor blinds system from Ziptrak within her outdoor balcony area, forming a cosy weatherproof alcove. The Ziptrak blinds move along a track that keeps it securely in place, eliminating the use of bulky cords; it can also be motorised.

The patented side spline also keeps the blind’s fabric firmly within the track, which helps to prevent rain and insects from entering the home whilst withstanding gusty wind speeds. This allows the blinds to offer ventilation without noisy rattling.

As Peh’s open-plan living room leads out directly to her balcony, the Ziptrak blinds allow her to open up her abode on balmy days for fresh air to permeate the rest of her interiors. Besides helping with air circulation, the blinds also protect them from the direct sun.

Building a home is a daunting task, but it’s made easier with a team with an attention to detail. “The road to realising our dream home was paved with many challenges, but we were so grateful to have found businesses like ClimaShield that remained unfazed and optimistic even in the face of obstacles,” Peh reflects.

Having encountered a lengthy and challenging journey when crafting her dream abode, home now takes on a deeper significance for the actress. “Home is where the heart is, and that’s just where I want to be,” she says, looking at the completed result with pride.
