Topic Design Studio uses the versatile Glass Curtains and Ziptrak Interior systems from Durablinds to create a beautiful rooftop concept inspired by tea pavilions

With their family now spending more time together at home, it was timely for a couple to give their underutilised rooftop areas a new look. The owners also wanted to enclose the exterior area so that these spaces could be air-conditioned when needed on humid days.

Inspired by the requirements of this ongoing project, local firm Topic Design Studio proposed a tea pavilion concept to create a tranquil respite on the attic level. Comprising a tea room, an office for the husband as well as a study for the kids, the rooftop is now designed for work and play.

We envisioned the area as an indoor-outdoor environment that’s almost like a resort in home.

“We envisioned the area as an indoor-outdoor environment that’s almost like a resort in home,” says Tan Sze Ling, founder of Topic Design Studio. “Rather than being cooped up in a room with four walls, we wanted to create an inspiring space where you can head out to the pool to unwind; it integrates the functions of an office at home within a resort setting.”

The owners had done some research on their own, and suggested the use of the Glass Curtains system from Durablinds to the design firm. They were impressed by the frameless design of the 10mm-thick glass panels, which can be tucked away to the side when they are not in use.

The patented frameless system sits on a bottom track instead of being hung from the ceiling; this reinforces the glass panels against turbulent weather. Additionally, Glass Curtains have been tested for impact performance, surface compression and fragmentation, and glide easily and quietly without the use of ball bearings, which will wear out over time. They can also be secured in place with a lock.

“We appreciate the frameless design of Glass Curtains as it contributes to the seamless look of the interior and it also keeps mosquitos out,” says Tan. “You can have the comfort of an interior space while enjoying the view outdoors. The natural light that filters into the interior gives it a hopeful and bright feel.”

After a consultation with Durablinds, the studio also incorporated blackout blinds from a new product, the Ziptrak Interior range. These blinds provide privacy while fully enclosing the space. They can also function as room dividers when lowered, separating the tea room from the husband’s home office.

“You get privacy with the blinds, controlling the degree of visibility that you want,” shares Tan. The firm also suggested the use of the blinds as a projector screen in the tea room where the family can enjoy a movie screening together. Furthermore, they can be customised to feature unique decorative patterns.

The Glass Curtains and Ziptrak Interior systems really blur the boundaries between the indoors and out, as well as work and leisure.

“We were intrigued by the option of printing bespoke patterns on the blinds. People often have the impression that blinds can be quite corporate-looking and come in a limited colour palette, so we like the fact that the Ziptrak Interior range offers customisable options.”

The studio is clearly impressed by the versatility of these window solutions. “The current trend is to have flexibility in your home to cater to different scenarios and needs,” says Tan. “The Glass Curtains and Ziptrak Interior systems really blur the boundaries between the indoors and out, as well as work and leisure.”
