MOW Interior creates a poolside porch that can be enjoyed regardless of the weather

Singapore’s hot, humid weather makes most homeowners less keen to use the outdoor spaces of their abodes; dust from the road and the problem of pesky insects are also among the contributing factors to underutilised balconies and outdoor areas. So when the owners of this house tasked MOW Interior co-founders Wong Teck Soon and Shermaine Ong to design an outdoor area that they would actually use more frequently, the dynamic duo were delighted to discover the Glass Curtains system from Durablinds.

For this project, which is currently in the early design phase, the firm proposed the use of the retractable glass panels for the owners’ poolside porch to turn it into a cosy nook for coffee and reading. The Glass Curtains will enclose the space during sweltering days so that the air-conditioning keeps the area comfortably cool, while the family will still get to enjoy views of the pool.

“We proposed to integrate the outdoor patio with the interior using Glass Curtains; this product from Durablinds is the key to achieving a visual connection with the outdoors,” shares Ong. To complement the nature-inspired theme, the firm picked an earthy palette composed of shades of taupe and grey, elevated with verdant accents to create an indoor garden. Adds Wong: “We have also recommended using tiles in a stone finish, as well as outdoor furniture and potted plants to achieve that indoor-outdoor effect.”

The designers can also foresee the use of Glass Curtains for balcony areas or mini garden terraces in future projects, as well as workspaces and living rooms that blur the line between indoor and outdoor areas.

“In the past, the challenge was that the glass panels could not be crafted without a frame, and even if we could do it frameless we would have a wind-whistling issue; you can hear the sound of the wind blowing through the glass panels, especially for apartments located on higher storeys. Durablinds now has a solution for this with Glass Curtains, so I was pretty impressed,” says Ong.

She adds: “In fact, I met them at the right time, which allowed me to propose this product to my clients to integrate their neglected patio with their interior space. And it seems like with every problem that I raise, Durablinds is able to resolve the issue.”
