Founded in 1990, Baxter utilises only the finest materials and expert craftsmanship to create exquisite pieces of furniture

From hewn stone to tanned leather, the finest pieces of furniture naturally utilise materials of the utmost quality. Yet, it takes a keen and innovative eye to see the underlying potential of these raw components and transform them into exquisite pieces of art.

Established in 1990, Baxter emphasises the importance of meticulous craftsmanship at every stage, reflecting the philosophy of Italian design that has guided the brand since the very beginning. Its founders, brothers Luigi and Paolo Bestetti, descend from a family of master saddle-makers, bestowing them with a natural mastery over leather, but also with a burning passion for creation and an attention to detail.

Baxter takes a material-first approach to creating furniture, especially with leather. Bull hides, sourced from North Europe and South America, are preferred for their combination of strength and flexibility, which are then processed by expert craftsmen in Tuscany and Veneto. Through its leathers, it has always conveyed the uniqueness of its furniture elements, far away from the concepts of product and seriality.

But rather than chase flawlessness, the brand embraces latent imperfections. It views uneven textures and rugged appearances as strengths: indicators of authenticity that it has consciously chosen to preserve. This is perhaps best expressed with the Marilyn armchair, designed by Draga & Aurel. Its wide, generous form acts as a nest, while its upholstery adds exceptional character and depth.

Though grounded in leather, Baxter’s talent for craftsmanship extends into other forms, from stones and resins to woods and textiles—likewise sourced from around the world, including the granite quarries of Patagonia to the carpetmakers of Nepal. All of its pieces begin with the selection of a material. It is from this form that a designer conceptualises a piece, slowly giving their creation a unique quality.

Each piece is one of a kind, slowly given form through a variety of colour, shapes and minute differences in patterns or textures. The Lagos table succinctly highlights the brand’s artistry, with its natural stone, patterns and textures remarkably kept. The bold veins of marble burst forth and assert its presence within the room, granting any space a great measure of personality.

Spontaneity is not something one usually expects from crafting furniture, but Baxter encourages its designers to have those flashes of inspiration, driven by passion and fervour. Indeed, unpredictability is its asset, as it chooses to walk upon untrodden land. Materials from across the globe are turned into unique pieces by expert craftsmen and informed by Italian design. Furniture is not simply something pleasing to the eye, nor is it something to lean on. They are expressions of innovation; bridges between cultures and worlds.
