From chilled sesame noodles and Korean nengmyeon to a luxe Italian curveball, these are the cold noodle dishes worth ordering across Metro Manila right now

Summers in Metro Manila are not for the faint of heart—and this May, we’re right in the thick of it. When the temperature climbs and the humidity settles in, the usual cold-weather comforts give way to a different kind of craving: something cold, something satisfying and something that still feels like a proper meal.

Cold noodles deliver on all counts. Across the metro’s dining landscape, they appear in many forms—the nutty depth of chilled sesame noodles, the bracingly frozen broth of Korean nengmyeon, the quiet elegance of cold soba—and, for those who like a surprise, at least one iteration on this list that trades chopsticks for a fork entirely.

Below, Tatler Dining rounds up the best places to order cold noodles in Metro Manila, drawn from our own editors’ picks and the most-loved recommendations from our readers.

1. Pilya’s Kitchen

Location: The Grid Food Market, Power Plant Mall, Makati City

A certified favourite in Power Plant Mall’s upscale food hall, Pilya’s Kitchen specialises in hand-pulled biang biang noodles, beloved for their toothsome chewy texture. While their tingly cumin beef and lamb noodles are arguably their most popular dish, the chilled sesame noodles are what you’re after this summer. The noodles are dressed in a rich and nutty sauce redolent with sesame, with fresh garnishes like cucumber and spring onions to cut through it—plus a final touch of chilli oil, which, counterintuitively, is actually proven to help you beat the heat.

2. Mendokoro Ramenba

Location: Various branches across Metro Manila (and one in Cebu!)

You may know Mendokoro Ramenba for its hearty tonkotsu ramen, spicy karai tokusei tsukemen or off-menu specials like the light Nagoya ramen reserved for those in the know—but have you tried their hiyashi chuka? Served cold, it’s adorned with shrimp, kani, chicken, chashu, cucumber and shredded eggs. Add their shoyu vinaigrette and sesame sauce to taste, and you’ve got a filling bowl of ramen that won’t make you break a sweat.

3. Ramen Ron

The most popular recommendations from our readers!

Location: Edades Tower, Rockwell Center, Makati City; Central Square, BGC, Taguig City

Notice a pattern yet? There’s something about cold noodles and sesame sauce that just works. Ramen Ron’s interpretation, the hiyashi goma ramen, knocks it out of the park with chewy wavy noodles, pork chashu, wakame and cucumbers. Pair it with Cibo’s signature iced tea, which never fails to refresh.

Tatler Tip: Did you know that you can cross-order from AF Hospitality’s neighbouring concepts? At Ramen Ron Rockwell, indulge in items from A Mano, and at Ramen Ron BGC, take your pick from Steak & Frice’s contemporary steakhouse plates.

4. Hálong

Location: First Midland Condominium Building, Legazpi Village, Makati City

At Hálong, chef Cara Davis presents her expression of Asian-Mexican cuisine, drawing from her roots as a Filipino chef who honed her chops in Mexico. Her chilled sesame noodles are among the most popular dishes at this laidback yet upscale restaurant, plated with fermented tofu, Sichuan peppercorn oil, garlic chive oil, guaijllo chilli, crispy garlic and crispy shallots. Tuck in the next time you’re in the neighbourhood and in need of a delicious dish to help cool you down—or simply to say hello (or rather, hola) to Davis’s adorable dog, Roca.

Sugi has remained synonymous with comforting Japanese cuisine for over four decades—and now that they’ve reopened with beautiful new interiors (and much of the same familiar faces), they’re ready to welcome a new generation to the table. When in search of cold noodles, Sugi’s selection of soba is sure to satisfy, with their tenzaru soba matsu with shrimp tempura being the highest grade. Meanwhile, their cha soba, featuring cold green tea buckwheat noodles, augments the soba’s complexity with an earthy note. Not in the mood for soba? Sugi offers hiyashi somen and hiyashi chuka, too.

7. Tang

Location: W Building, BGC, Taguig City

Tang offers straightforward Korean cuisine in an unfussy setting—and it’s open 24 hours, 7 days a week, perfect for any late-night feasting needs. Pick between their mul nengmyeon, bibim nengmyeon, gaya mul milmyeon or gaya bibim milmyeon. While nengmyeon denotes buckwheat or starch noodles with a deeper flavour, milmyeon refers to Busan-style wheat noodles. Conversely, mul- means the noodles are served in a cold broth, while bibim- is served sans broth, typically with a spicy sauce. Which of the four is best? That’s the age-old question, and one that will ultimately be answered based on your personal preference.

Led by Grace Lee alongside her mum, Mama Lee, the restaurant is among the most premium choices for Korean barbecue. Complete your meal with their mul nemgmyun: one of Mama Lee’s signature dishes anchored by a rich broth of beef shank and seaweed, served as a slushy atop buckwheat noodles with pickled radish, Korean pear, cucumber and a soft-boiled egg. For those seeking a little kick, Korean mustard and vinegar are also served on the side.

With various locations around Metro Manila, Marugame Udon provides a dining experience that’s quick, easy and widely accessible. Their signature dish, the beef ontama bukkake udon, is a simple bowl of udon, broth, sliced beef and Japanese poached egg, which you can then top with spring onions, togarashi and tenkasu or agedama (tempura flakes) for textural interest—and it is the only item on the menu that can be served hot or cold.

10. Lusso

Location: Greenbelt 5, Makati City; The Balmori Suites, Rockwell Center, Makati City; The Podium, Mandaluyong City
