The Writer’s Bar trades literary craft for visual arts with their newest afternoon tea offering, inspired by the works of Juvenal Sansó

Juvenal Sansó is easily among the country’s most sought-after artists. Hailing from Catalonia, the acclaimed painter moved to the Philippines in 1934 and spent much of his childhood in the historic town of Paco. Now on the cusp of 94, the Presidential Medal of Merit recipient continues to live and work in the nation’s capital while his artworks are found on display all over the world, earning the artist a wealth of accolades.

In collaboration with the Modern and Contemporary Art Festival (MoCAF) 2023 and Fundacion Sansó, The Writer’s Bar at Raffles Makati honours the master of visual artistry with a delectable afternoon tea experience inspired by his works. “Art is very close to the heart of Raffles Makati,” shares hotel manager Aubrey Ada. “[We house] over 1,600 art pieces by local artists with select masterpieces being highlighted through an art tour, available to interested hotel guests, and is conducted by the hotel curator and head of butler service, Julio Lapuz.”

The limited-time offering was launched last July 6 to an audience of esteemed guests, including individuals from the diplomatic community, hotel regulars, and key opinion leaders. To commemorate the occasion, Baguio-based painter Art Lozano guided select guests through an interactive painting activity in homage to Sansó’s works. Lozano recently contributed to the ‘Tribute to Sansó’ group show at Galerie Joaquin and is one of the commissioned artists and contributors to Raffles Makati’s art collection.
