Here are our dining editor’s picks for a long weekend in the Lion City

Singapore is undoubtedly a food haven, home to some of Asia’s most renowned and highly accoladed fine dining spots and bars as well as a slew of hearty local eats. Other than dining and drinking, the island also has much to offer in terms of culture and activities, from art galleries to lifestyle hubs.

On a recent weekend trip, armed with a packed schedule, here were some of my most memorable experiences, from places to drink and dine, to activities around the area.

Explore New Bahru

School hall-turned-lifestyle hub New Bahru is home to some of Singapore’s most creative initiatives, from bars and restaurants to experiential plant shop Soilboy. I stopped by PPP Coffee (which is also the parent brand of Pulp in APW Bangsar) and Bar Bon Funk, a buzzy space designed like a living room with classic and contemporary cocktails. A personal favourite was the +1 for Oat, made with nut milk, espresso, and homemade coffee liqueur.

Dine at Odette and visit the National Gallery Singapore

Ranking 24 on the World’s Best Restaurants, Odette is named after chef Julien Royer’s grandmother, with the restaurant celebrating his French roots with expert use of seasonal ingredients, including local ones. Expect faultless dishes such as langoustine dumpling with leek fondue, Jeju abalone with foie gras and yuzu, and the signature Kampot pepper-crusted pigeon (which I first had the pleasure of trying during a collaboration between Odette and Potager). End a fulfilling meal here with a much-needed walk around the National Gallery Singapore, where the restaurant is located.

For a unique take on Chinese flavours, visit Restaurant Born

A culmination of chef Zor Tan’s Malaysian-Chinese heritage, French training, and expertise in Sichuan and Taiwanese cuisine, Restaurant Born holds a unique place within Singapore’s dining scene. From chicken wings stuffed with pig stomach to a bread course of egg custard and foie gras inspired by Lord Stow’s bakery in Macau, dishes here bring out the inner child, especially to those who grew up around Chinese home cooking.

For faultless hospitality and fun cocktails, visit Jigger and Pony

Recently crowned 5th on the World’s Best Bars list, Jigger and Pony is a must-visit in Singapore. While the bar fills out fast, happy hour from 6-7:30pm is an ideal time to visit for affordable drinks and to miss the crowd. Personal favourites on the current menu include the famed Espresso Martini with a cacao tuile and coffee flower honey as well as the classic Clover Club.

Tuck into a seafood feast at Keng Eng Kee Seafood

Legacy seafood eatery Keng Eng Kee Seafood dates back to the 1970s. Now run by third-generation brothers Paul and Wayne Liew, the restaurant is best known for its fresh seafood, featured in dishes such as the lobster noodles and chilli crab. I first met the brothers at a street food party during Nusara’s fourth anniversary in Bangkok, where they cooked up one of their signature dishes, Moonlight Hor Fun, crowned with egg yolk.
