It’s no secret that Singaporeans enjoy taking a trip across the border for day trips that often involve feasting at the best local restaurants and cafes.

1. Tian Lai Restaurant

Stop by this humble restaurant and dig into hearty seafood dishes. You’ll want to try its popular dishes like the signature kam heong crab, featuring the juicy crustacean tossed in a fragrant dried shrimp and curry powder mix. The salted egg crab is another fan favourite, a dish bursting with sweet and savoury flavours. On top of seafood, other dishes include rich curry pork ribs, marmite chicken and sambal kang kong.

2. Anjung Senibong Seafood

Located within Senibong Village, this Muslim-owned restaurant allows you to savour hearty seafood dishes along the calm sea. 3. Todak Seafood Restaurant

One of the most popular restaurants to visit, Todak Seafood serves up gorgeous sea views, charming ambiance and indulgent seafood. Head down early as tables get filled from 6pm onwards. An extensive selection of seafood is available, including shellfish, prawns and crab. Standouts include garlic stir-fried crab, steamed red grouper and curry prawns.

4. San Low Seafood

One of the stalwarts in Johor Bahru’s seafood food scene, San Low started out as a small hawker stall in Stulang Darat in the 1990s, before relocating to its current home in Taman Pelangi. Today, the joint continues to serve up an extensive range of delectable seafood dishes, like the San Low Bee Hoon redolent of wok hei and loaded with prawns, pork and fish cake. Another stellar option is the salted egg crab, a signature dish featuring tender and flavourful crab doused in a thick and creamy sauce.

5. Fat Fish JB

Hot pot and seafood—what more can a foodie ask for? This hotpot-style restaurant is known for its aromatic soup bases and delectable seafood pots. If you’re dining in a big group, go for the seafood platter, as it comes generously topped with prawns, abalones, clams and squid. Dip these sumptuous offerings in the mala soup base, a crowd favourite that offers the fragrant and fiery flavours of peppercorn and Szechuan chilli peppers. Individual pots are available too, like the sliced tilapia set replete with enoki mushrooms, tilapia, vegetables and tofu. If you are still feeling peckish, top up your set with a selection of a la carte fish and crustaceans, including Hokkaido scallops, mud crabs and lobsters.

6. Yi Jia Seafood

Have a taste of fresh local seafood at Yi Jia. Look forward to comforting dishes that put the spotlight on the fresh catch of the day. Do look out for the popular otah crab, a Southern Malaysian delicacy of steamed crab meat mixed with spices to accentuate its sweetness, as well the succulent crab glazed in sweet honey sauce. Not a fan of this crustacean? Go for the cod, which is steamed until tender and flaky and elevated with the addition of aromatic black garlic.

7. Ong Shun Seafood Restaurant

This halal-certified zi char and seafood restaurant is a favourite among locals and tourists, thanks to its extensive menu and fresh catches. When it comes seafood, you have salted egg squid, grilled fish and tulip sauce clams (or kam heong). The latter is stir-fried in a medley of sauces and spices until they’re aromatic and delicious. Complement your seafood with zi char offerings like the moonlight kuey tiao, comprising silky smooth noodles wok-fried with seafood and glazed with a silky brown sauce.

8. Restoran Chua Kee
