Oscars 2023: 10 food and drinks to pair with the Best Picture nominees

Elvis Presley was known for his specific cravings and the most famous one is his favourite sandwich: toasted bread, peanut butter, sliced bananas, and crisp bacon. It sounds like the perfect snack as you wait to see if Austin Butler beat Brendan Fraser for Best Actor. 

The movie details the harrowing stories of Mennonite women grappling with their abusive realities. Unsurprisingly, there isn't much of a focus on food in the movie, but you can give Mennonite cooking, which stems from Eastern Europe and Russia, a try. A simple casserole with cabbage, potatoes, and kielbasa or sausage, is a Mennonite favourite.

For The Banshees of Inisherin which is set in Ireland, prepare the classic Irish beef and Guinness stew, which has a rich and deep flavour profile thanks to the stout beer. 

In the movie, we see rich tourists marooned on an island and forced to ration pretzels in order to stay alive. Pretzels, whether you choose to serve the larger soft pretzels or smaller crunchy ones, are simply delightful to snack on while watching the hours-long ceremony. Serve them with a dip or on a cheese board.

Directed by Edward Berger, All Quiet on the Western Front is up for nine Oscars this year. To emulate the muddy trenches in the movie, make yourself a messy chocolate mud cake. This fudgy and rich confection is smothered in ganache, which makes for the perfect dessert for your watch party. 

We could go on about the puns we could make with the name Tár: tártare sauce, beef tártare, and so on.

However, we are tapping into the German food scene with this movie, as it follows Cate Blanchett's Lydia Tár, a fictional female director of a German orchestra. A schnitzel is a quintessential German food that is easy to prepare and works wonders as a party food, especially when served with fries. 

This Steven Spielberg film follows Sammy Fabelman and his family as the former discovers his love for filmmaking. One of the movie's pivotal moments is the family's Shabbat dinner, in which challah bread is an integral part of the spread. Take it up a notch and accompany it with Spielberg's favourite dish, chicken pot pie.

Avatar: The Way of Water is awash with hues of blue, so we, of course, had to pair it with a blue-coloured drink. And the closest you'll get to a true blue tone is with the butterfly pea flower, which you can infuse in soda water. Squeeze a bit of lemon juice and the drink will transform into a striking pink colour.

We actually found an appropriately named whisky to match the Top Gun sequel: Maverick Whiskey from San Antonio, Texas, that is owned by the Maverick family. While procuring one at this juncture before the Oscars is unrealistic, we still think it's a good idea to whip up a classic Old Fashioned for awards viewing.
