Suppertime and the livin’ is easy at these supper spots that Singapore’s top jazz singers, pianists, and musicians go to for a bite after playing their hearts out

Over my many years as a live music performer, I’ve come to be convinced (with significant bias, of course) that acquiring the ability to play tasteful chord substitutions somehow also hones one’s literal tastebuds. After an invigorating night of swinging hard on stage, our senses are heightened and our appetites awakened. Thus, the post-gig conversation naturally turns to: “where are we going for supper?”. Someone in the band always has an excellent recommendation.

The supper hang is undoubtedly my favourite part of gigging. You have to understand that most of my musician friends spend the bulk of their time “shedding”—holed up alone in their rehearsal rooms practicing. At the gig, work takes precedence, so most of our meaningful socialising actually happens over piping hot plates of Thai stir-fry or comforting fluffy stacks of roti prata. I confess that I sometimes deliberately head down to a jazz club late to watch my friends in their last set, with the true agenda of joining them for supper after.

Here’s a collection of late-night eating spots recommended by some of the best and brightest musicians in my industry. If you spot a group of people dressed in formal blacks (it’s a giveaway if they’re also carrying instrument cases), there’s a good chance they are jazz musicians, and you should definitely ask them for recommendations on what to order.

1. RK Eating House

Jeremy Monteiro, jazz piano maestro and founder of Jass

“I have managed to largely avoid supper the past couple of years, but the Indian rojak or the RK Special complete with eggs and mutton curry are my go-to when I fall off the wagon.”

2. Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup (Kembangan)

Alemay Fernandez, jazz singer

“Don’t be fooled by the restaurant’s name. While it’s famous for its pork mee sua in a soothing thick herbal broth, it also serves some of the best zi char around. The must-try dishes are chao ta (charred) bee hoon, crab vermicelli, fresh ikan kurau (cooked however you want), and home-made Malaysian-style steamed otah. Regi Leo, a fellow foodie musician, introduced me to this supper gem in the East.”

3. Liu Da Ma Charcoal BBQ

Benny Goh, trumpeter, and orchestra and repertoire manager for Jass

“The dishes here are tasty and affordable, and one of my favourites is the special lamb leg roasted on a grill embedded in your table. This is a place I bring all my musicians friends who are visiting from overseas to; so far, no one has said it’s not good.”

5. Imam Banana Leaf Restaurant

Benjamin Poh, jazz bassist

“The fish head curry is one of the best, if not the best in Singapore. It’s so good, I literally went to the hospital at one point for overindulging. It’s a whole fish head and not those mini servings you get at mediocre restaurants. It’s also very reasonably priced.”

6. Hong Chang Frog Porridge & BBQ Fish

Joanna Dong, Mandopop-jazz singer

“Porridge is the supper food for those who need to fool themselves into believing that they are going for the ‘healthier’ choice. The porridge here, however, mainly serves to appease one’s conscience—what truly satisfies the soul and appetite are the robust flavours of the claypot frogs’ legs and barbecued sambal stingray. I was first brought here by friends from local indie band Lilac Saints, which goes to show that jazz musicians don’t have a monopoly on good supper recommendations!”
