Where and what to eat in this vibrant urban enclave in the largest city of England

Once a major goods depot, the highly gentrified King's Cross in London is now home to multiple major tech giants, hip fashion brands and most importantly, a plethora of food. The gastronomical haven is known for its bustling food markets, open green spaces, and a stunning arts college.

While I never regret moving back to Kuala Lumpur after residing in King's Cross for three years, I do sometimes miss this lively hub. From plates of pasta to fluffy pancakes and flaky pastries, here are my top recommendations for a weekend of eating in the area—though you'll hardly scrape the surface of what it has to offer.

Start your day early at Gail's Bakery

Boasting fresh baked goods from 7am, the café is the ideal pit stop for an early morning coffee and pastry. A personal recommendation would be the feta and dill escargot, drizzled with runny za’atar honey.

Plus points go to the wifi and multiple plug points, making it ideal place for studying or working.

Don't miss a trip to Canopy Market

Every Friday to Sunday, the sheltered area just off Granary Square is transformed into a vibrant food market, with offerings ranging from street food and fresh pasta to hot chai and tacos.

Bring back a loaf of bread from Little Bread Pedlar—the focaccia is some of the most tender and springy I’ve tried, with gloriously large pockets. If you have the time, grab some food from the market before walking along the canal, past Camden Market, until you reach Primrose Hill. While the walk isn’t short, the stunning view is more than worth your time.

For brunch, visit Granger and Co, Caravan, or Dishoom

You’ll be spoiled for choice when looking for a brunch spot in Kings Cross.

For fluffy lemon ricotta pancakes with honeycomb butter, visit Granger and Co. For harissa baked eggs or a hangover fry up, Caravan is a favourite.

For a less conventional brunch, Dishoom serves a bacon naan roll layered with cream cheese, a luscious tomato-chilli jam, and smoked bacon. Paired with a glass of warm chai, and there are few meals as satisfying.

Have a fancy meal at Lina Stores or Coal Office

Italian restaurant and delicatessen Lina Stores serves up some of the best plates of handmade pasta in town. Not to mention the bright interior with splashes of pastel green.

Another great option is Coal Office, which offers fresh Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours in a stylish setting.
